2023.05.31 11:46 KinderSmock Harvey Harrison

I know some fans around the Collingwood forums aren’t too sure why we’ve named Harrison for a debut when he’s putting together numbers not seen since Chugg.
But he’s been named for a reason. He’s got work ethic, pressure ability and hunger. He may not touch the ball much, but when he does, he’s able to use it and use it well. He was actually an emergency all the way back in R1, 2022. I have taken note ever since then and his progress has been gaining. Last year, he would have likely debuted had it not been for a hamstring injury. His draft comparison was Dangerfield and there are certainly elements of Patrick in his game.
Expect him to be an option just outside of the contest, crumbing packs and tackling hard. Likely to be playing a “burst” role, too.
So best of luck to the #36 on the weekend - perhaps you’ll be our first rising star nomination for the year.

2023.05.31 11:45 BruteSentiment Observations from a Week in Eugene (High-A)

Observations from a Week in Eugene (High-A)
This is a little late, but it took some time to write and get the photos together. After spending a week watching the Emeralds play in Eugene, I’ve got some assessments of the players and the team for everyone to read.
Grant McCray
McCray has been having a better May than an April, which mirrors his 2022, but this past week he looked fairly frustrated, even as he picked up hits here and there, until Sunday’s two double game. He looks a lot like he needs focus, because when he has it, the game comes to him. What was not a question was his fabulous gifts of athleticism. He covered center field beautifully with great routes, and showed off his speed on the basepaths as well.
Grant McCray. He's going to beat that throw.
Grant McCray watches his bunt...this one became a hit.
Aeverson Arteaga
The biggest thing that stood out about Arteaga this week was how smooth his defense was. Although you don’t see Arteaga as a speedster on the basepaths, he has quickness at the shortstop position to be able to reach anything near him, and his throws were all very easy for the first baseman to handle. Arteaga also had a walkoff home run in the first game of the week, his third game with a home run in a row, but the offense is not going to be his calling card. As long as he is driving baseballs, whether or not they’re over the fence, his defense will carry him.
Aeverson Arteaga. It's pronounced \"Iverson\", btw.
He gets there. He got the out on this play, too.
Carson Whisenhunt
Okay, so I got to see Carson on his worst day (so far) in High-A. Whisenhunt was relying far more on his fastball than I expected, and he was not very sharp with either his fastball or his changeup, which led to hitters being able to wait for fat ones over the plate to prey on. This is probably just a one-off, considering how well Whisenhunt had done before this start. What is good news is that Whisenhunt continued to show a mid-90’s fastball, which is up a bit from his college numbers, and should make his changeup even more effective. I believe I also saw Whisenhunt working with two different changeup grips, which was interesting, a standard one and a circle change that had more movement. He did flash a curveball, but it wasn’t a primary part of his arsenal right now.
Carson Whisenhunt
Gotta say, that hair and facial hair is a terrifying thing to face.
Eric Silva
It was also a rough game for Eric Silva this week. His slider did net him quite a few strikeouts, but he was a bit off with his fastball, and gave up hits off of both of those pitches in this game. You can see flashes of the top prospect that many people rank him as, but I hope we’ll see more consistency out of his fastball to pair with that slider, and hopefully a little more strength out of the 20-year old as he grows.
Eric Silva
Victor Bericoto
One thing about Bericoto that was very different about him now, compared to the 2022 version I’d see, is that he just looks polished at the plate. He was driving balls more consistently, and that matches what we’ve seen with his numbers. This will help establish him on prospect lists starting this season. The downside, though, is that he still struggles defensively. He is much improved in right field from last year, but he’s still sub-par, with his route-taking still needing work, and some misjudged dives and ricochets. Bericoto did look decent at first base, and that could be a fallback for him if his bat helps carry him.
Victor Bericoto
Gassed...but more importantly, how does his hair still look that good after being in a batting helmet?
Adrian Sugastey
It’s hard not to have a good impression after a 2-home run day, and that’s what Adrian Sugastey had on one day during this trip. Sugastey was driving baseballs with surprising power considering his frame, as the 20-year old still looks very young among his peers and there’s growth still to come. Behind the plate, there’s still work to do, as Sugastey had a couple of passed balls and wild pitches he could’ve done more with, but he still looks like a catcher long-term.
Adrian Sugastey
He looks so young (because he is!).
Logan Wyatt
Out of any player on the Emeralds that I was seeing for a second or third time, none was as different a player as Logan Wyatt. He looks like he’s grown into his body, grown stronger, and among a lot of younger players in High-A, he looked like a man among boys. He was also different on the field. He was being more selective at balls he swung at, and was driving them much more. His defensive fundamentals were also changed, and looking better. This is Wyatt’s second go-around in Eugene, so you don’t want to look at good numbers on a second season at a level and take it without a grain of salt, but Wyatt looks like a player who should be trying Double-A. At 25, he definitely should be.
Logan Wyatt
It's crazy to see a big man still go for a slide all out.
Jimmy Glowenke
Glowenke was doing his thing on the diamond, both at second and third base, and was slapping the ball all around all week. He was looking very impressive indeed, although the same caveat of repeating a level applies to him that I mentioned with Wyatt. But the thing about Glowenke is that he is still a wiry young man, although at 23, there’s not much more growth I’d be expecting. The power, or lack thereof, will be something of concern for him going forward.
Update: After writing this, we learned that Jimmy Glowenke earned a callup to Richmond!
Jimmy Glowenke
Yes, ump, I still have the ball. He was caught stealing. Call him out. (He was out.)
Jose Cruz
Of all the 40-man additions made last November, José Cruz was the unlikeliest, and he surprisingly remains in just High-A (in the past, Farhan Zaidi has been very aggressive after placing the 40-man tag on a young pitcher). Cruz attacks the plate with some ferocity, although his velocity was still around 92-93 with the fastball, which is a tick down from what got him that 40 man spot. I’d expect a call-up sometime soon for him.
José Cruz
I don't think I saw any pitcher look as tensed as him on the mound.
Ben Madison
One of the most surprising pitchers was Madison. Madison had just about the highest velocity I saw in his two appearances, topping out around 96. Madison’s numbers don’t look overwhelming, but at least in this week, they were. The 25-year old is another pitcher I’d say is looking for a promotion, and might be a serious sleeper in the system.
Ben Madison
He's older than a lot of his competition, but he just looks fierce up there.
The Team
Eugene, as a team, is simply one of the most well-run minor league teams around. Just look at all the different uniforms in these pictures to get an idea of how tapped into the idea of different team identities from the leadership. Especially the incredibly popular Exploding Whales uniforms and story behind it. While not every game has the stands packed, especially on weeknights, but the fans are always having fun and it’s clear that everyone there is engaged, on and off the field. But that’s why this final thing is sad to say…
The Stadium
In past years that I’ve visited Eugene, the Emeralds had a presence in the pictures and banners and other things around the park. On this visit, it was all, and only, Oregon Ducks. Granted, it’s the college baseball season, but still. Even to the point that the whiteboard that held lineups that you see at almost every park only had the last Oregon Ducks’ game lineup, and not the nightly Emeralds lineup. Everyone knows that the Emeralds need a new stadium that meets MLB guidelines, but on this visit, it was clear whose home this stadium was, and who just plays there.
It’s unfortunate. A franchise as well run as the Emeralds deserves their true home.

2023.05.31 11:37 wasp0509 Need help - Silent Gaming Notebook

Hey!
I´m searching for a silent gaming Notebook that has the option to game via USB C or with an smaller power brick (because i travel a lot). I´ve just got the Asus M16 with 3070ti,I9 12900, 32GB Ram. The Display ist nice but the Notebook is REALLY loud! I´ve testet several Mods in Amoury Create and G Helper but the Fan Noise ist always really annoying. I can return this Notebook and just ordered the 2022 G14 with 6800s. Is it possibly to get the Fan noise lower with that? (Or is there any option with the M16 - i don´t like the silent Mode because the 60FPS limit....). Or is the only option to get a Razer Blade 14 or 15? I´ve heard that the Fan Noise here is pretty good here. Do you have any ideas to "fix" my problem?!
Greets from Germany ;-)

2023.05.31 11:31 KKshilling Advice For Interns Nailing Your Summer Finance Internship

I’ve been grinding away on a lot of writing on credit recruiting, advice for interns, and other career resources for junior peers in finance and have roughly 17,000 words written so far. This will steadily be coming out over the next few months – and we’re kicking it off today starting with advice for interns. My disclaimer for everything I’ll be writing is as follows – one person’s career advice may not be the perfect fit for you and you should combine the opinion of 5-10 people you respect and then determine what is YOUR best path. But alas, I’ve walked the path of being a bulge bracket intern, and have spent a lot of time thinking through the insight I can provide the interns and junior people that follow the account – and here’s what I’ve got.
First – advice for people with interns: Be nice and understanding to your intern.
To be honest, whether we like to admit it or not, this is how most of us came into the industry: A lot of us came into the industry thinking we knew more than we actually did because we read about it in a textbook, got good grades, and saw xyz finance meme. But the reality is a lot of us were vastly unprepared to be a value-added resource during the early stages of our career. One MD said to me once as a college senior “They don’t expect you to know anything. They’re hiring for someone who can learn as they go.” I didn’t realize this as a college senior, but after six months of working this became very obvious to me. Companies are hiring interns for their potential. Their potential comes from 1) having a good work ethic and 2) having a good attitude. As an intern, if you work hard and be pleasant to work with, then you’re going to win 9 times out of 10.
It's hard to remember, but there was a time where none of us had any clue what we were doing. Arguably, this continues on in your career and the humblest investors truly believe this. So look here’s my advice – sure interns be saying the darndest things sometimes – but let’s try to cut them slack, treat them fairly, and remember we were once in their same shoes?
Sure, if a Gen Z intern is out there being a jerk and snobbish, then maybe this isn’t valid, but if they’re hardworking, showing a lot of potential, and are super coachable then it is your job to help them develop into a potential asset at your firm.
Also – this is a relatively more “stressful” year for interns. College kids are always a lot more panicked about the job market than people who already have experience under their belt to begin with - but this economy isn’t lessening their worries. A lot of college kids are seeing the class of 2023 have offers pulled and enter a tougher job market. Now they’re starting to get spooked a bit and may feel a little out of control. Try your best to encourage and develop them – these guys are probably feeling a little like how the 2008-2009 grads felt, to a degree.
Okay – so here’s my 20 point list of recommendations for interns.
First - last year I started a debate over whether banking interns should take vacations in the middle of their internship….and people actually tried countering it. LMAO! I’m going to try this bit again sometime soon to get the people going and let’s still see people still think that while we’re on the precipice of a recession.
1) Be careful with social media. DO NOT MAKE TIKTOKS. Emphasizing this in all caps. There’s a reason all the Finmemes and FinTwit burners are anonymous and not dancing around on the internet. Most TikToks are very cringeworthy and seem to always find their way to HR once they go viral. People will 100% get fired over what they post to TikTok or Snapchat. Your TikToks are very likely to be spread to large audiences on Instagram or Twitter – which is totally fair game (you posted it, you gotta own what you post). With that said, if you ask nicely I’ll take a TikTok down, but other accounts openly will not. In general, don’t take your phone out and record or take photos of stuff, especially given all the sensitive materials we work with. Don’t post sensitive information from your computer on your IG story captioned “grinding hard” “working on the weekend like usual” or some shit.
2) Don’t take a week long vacation during a ten-week internship. Last year, I made this obvious remark on twitter, got a bunch of ppl in agreement, but also riled up a tonnnn of people on twitter (didn’t seem like the typical finance folk though) but it’s true. I want everyone reading this to succeed – which is why I’m telling this hard truth. Bosses in banking will frown upon you missing 10% of your learning experience to go vacation. You can always vacation before or after your internship (this is what I did lol). Remember as an intern, you are trying out for a sports team – you haven’t made the team yet, but you’re getting the chance to make the big leagues. Would you leave the team in the middle of preseason before the roster is finalized? Of course not. It’s that simple.
3) Dress the part without overdressing: You don’t want to wear a significantly oversized suit but you also shouldn’t be wearing Gucci loafers as an intern. Ideally you want to dress in a pretty standard way that isn’t drawing attention to yourself as someone who seems out of place. I’d lose any dress shirts with shirt pockets and I’m not a fan of oxford collars (this one may be too harsh but just my opinion). I just don’t think oxford collars go well with a tie and/or suit. Make sure your dress shirts aren’t wrinkled af. Obviously no Gordon Gekko dress shirts. In terms of shoes, Gucci loafers are frowned upon as an intern/first year because you haven’t really gone through the ringer, may be perceived as entitled, and hence don’t deserve this status symbol. This is the case for nice watches too. This is the perception from senior people, so ya, just wait until after a sick bonus and snag the more-status like attire after your first 1-3 years.

4) You want to look professional, this may mean having a professional haircut: Look – so if I see a Gen Z analyst with that typical Gen Z haircut (I later learned it’s called a “broccoli cut”) I do not take them seriously. I figured this was kind of mean of me, so I went to Twitter to confirm whether other people think this. In fact, they overwhelmingly agree. Older generations think the broccoli cut looks stupid as hell.

Again, it’s not about “what’s accepted” by your generation, it’s about what’s accepted (without being said obviously) within the workforce. Again, this is me speaking a hard truth. I’d like for HYH readers to be taken seriously – and I’m telling you a large amount of FinTwit just said this haircut below looks silly! Read the tea leaves.

https://preview.redd.it/bvgvzcuhg63b1.png?width=477&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ea98cc719152f926751f143066a562ac6421e13
5) Don’t make the same mistake twice: Easier said than done, but the people evaluating you are keeping tabs on whether you’re smart/teachable. They’ve been trained by this philosophy and are judging you by the same standards. If you make the same mistake twice, then they may perceive that you may not have the ability to retain information, learn from experience, etc. Tough, but this is true and happens constantly. I got screamed at once where my VP said “he asked this same question before!!” to a couple of MDs. Tbh the MDs didn’t really care, but wasn’t a great feeling. Try to keep tabs on what you’ve already asked and have been shown.
6) Don’t #REF the model or some important file: When you’re working in an excel model or PowerPoint on your own you should make a copy from the original just in case you totally #REF! the model. Create a copy of “ImportantModel” and name it “ImportantModelYourInitials”. That way if you do something really dumb (who knows, you may change something they don’t like), at least there’s a backup. Tbh you may need to keep doing this throughout the entirety of your career and should engrain this in yourself as a best practice.
7) Steve Schwarzman (Founder of Blackstone) once said this isn’t school – you need a 100% score. This is the most important lesson here. In college, an A is a mid-90s grade. In a famous YouTube video where Schwarzman greets the first year analyst class at Blackstone, he notes how only a 100 is acceptable and As/Bs are not. He says this was his biggest challenge when he was just starting out. I’d strongly recommend watching this video later when you’re done reading through my list. He spits absolute fire here.
8) WFH will happen later in your career….your internship isn’t the time to be remote: In 2021/2022 I got some pushback on this point, but look now! Finance firms have brought pretty much everyone back to the office and a large chunk of front office professionals are in five days a week. Obviously there’s plenty of people at three days a week and four days a week, but I don’t know anyone in finance with “one or two days or fully remote”. I’ve previously noted that I thought a bunch of people were making a mistake by moving to fully remote too soon in their careers. I thought remote workers would be the first to go in a downturn and that has played out a ton over the past year. A remote worker’s connectivity is lower than the people a manager may see around a water cooler. Obviously, someone outside of finance, someone who’s an absolute stud, or an entrepreneur can leverage remote work ofc. I personally don’t think your 20’s are a great time to be too focused on being remote first, and the focus should be on building a reputation first. Obviously your first job (your internship) is meant as mainly a learning experience and a great opportunity to learn from smart people! Therefore as long as those smart people are in the office, you should be there too. If the firm has a 3-4 day policy then you get to follow that, but if you have a couple notable people in 5 days a week, then I would suck it up and get in the office 5 days a week. Also, this may be a great way to differentiate yourself and get more one-on-one time while the rest of the office is empty. Also – you’re trying out for a team! Make the team!
9) Proofread constantly: The more you re-read the higher the probability of catching errors! I’m terrible at proofreading. My ADHD ass is bouncing around constantly and I always miss stuff – but hopefully you guys can do better than me. Some tips: A) read from beginning to end, B) read backwards (from end to beginning), C) say out loud what you’re proofreading under your breath, D) read on a different format (for ex. If you were proofreading in word, try proofreading again in a PDF format), and E) print out the end product and proofread on paper. You don’t have to do all 5…(I don’t)..but you should find a formula to proofread and over-read effectively.
10) Over-communicate: It’s okay if you say or email “Will do”, “sounds good” , or “On it” constantly – I would confirm receipt to every email your direct co-workers send you so the sender knows you’re attentive and understood their instructions. Over-communicating via responding to emails is the move because it allows the person delegating work to you to understand that they don’t have to hover over you. When someone who isn’t your staffer talks to you too, it might be helpful to bring up in conversation – “I’m working with Kevin on xyz deal” or “I’ve been helping with xyz”- this is a good way to show people that you’re 1) staying busy and 2) contributing and people actually know what you’re up to.
11) Write everything down: When someone is speaking to you there is an expectation that you should be taking notes. Would be brutal if you finish an assignment but forget one piece because you forgot and didn’t have that part written down. Part of writing everything down too is so you can review and refresh on the lessons you’ve learned from your internship. I’d recommend reading through the learnings you have written down once a week. And obviously, post internship you can reflect on what you’ve learned and have off hand in case you need it in another setting. On that note, if there’s anything interesting you wrote down or worked on that you need to reference going forward – make sure you grab it and take it with you before your final day. Not the cleanest advice I’m giving rn – but it’s something a lot of people do and post-internship you may regret forgetting to bring home your firm’s powerpoint shortcut pdf, a primer on covenant lite loans, or a certain sell-side research report. Just speaking facts.

https://preview.redd.it/ltqwpdrkg63b1.png?width=638&format=png&auto=webp&s=ced91af93b5499d0e44f258c374ae73f38e77f8a
12) Predict demands: This may be more for first-year analysts, but figuring out where you can add value and save people time is how you can justify your salary. For interns, it’s more about 1) learning experience, 2) being a good cultural fit, and 3) being teachable. But if you’re an intern tasked with “analyst like tasks” then I would try to take a step back and think of where you can add value. If someone senior asks you to do a task that seems recurring in nature, that’s a good place to take initiative going forward. Just confirm with them of course, that this is something recurring and something they want you to do, as you don’t want to accidentally mess something up or overstep. If you can get started on a task that you know someone is going to ask you to do anyways, go for it. Show that initiative.
13) Network with everyone, leave no stone unturned: I wouldn’t network with people immediately (you need to find your footing the first week or two) but it’s a mistake to not block off time to talk to every relevant person you can get in front of. Personalize your approaches and personalize your follow-ups, but recognize as an intern you’ll get a lot of flexibility to get in front of people that you may not be able to get in front of in a couple of years. Also make sure you chill with your fellow interns. Don’t be the person who doesn’t converse with the other interns. These are relationships that can become pretty important down the line as you will be able to pick each other’s brains as you navigate your early career. Also make sure you remember people’s names and don’t guess if you don’t know. If someone has a name that’s hard to spell – check their email first to make sure you spelled it right before firing it off. Last summer I got called the wrong name a few times by an intern on a different team. I didn’t bother correcting them, figuring it’s funnier to let them keep making the same mistake, and they looked like an idiot when they got it wrong in front of other people near the end of their internship

https://preview.redd.it/l9nm54fmg63b1.png?width=903&format=png&auto=webp&s=80a2be27ca070587d58a41ce270624d7d29ca2a2
14) Show this is where you want to work after graduation (even if that’s not true): Remember, you’re trying out for a sports team, make sure you show you want to join the big leagues. Look, you may even have to pretend you want to work there after graduation even if that’s a bold faced lie. If there’s murmurs you’re just using this internship as a stepping stone, you will be toast. You’ll have a year to shop for a better gig – just focus on securing the offer! Also – we’re probably about to enter a recession – don’t get cute! Get the job!

https://preview.redd.it/om9lnonng63b1.png?width=547&format=png&auto=webp&s=a4024053ba716b011164a996d23665ed376bd28f
15) Don’t get sloppy while drinking: This is very important. This isn’t college anymore. Bosses don’t care about how much you drink or how sick you are (I’ve made this mistake honestly). Keep your cool while drinking with colleagues and keep your cool if there’s an intern after party that follows a general work party. Again, this isn’t college, use your best judgement even when impaired.
16) Focus on what you can control, don’t focus on what you can’t control. This was really good advice I got from a MD. You have to accept some things are out of your control, which is tough for the personality types that know they can force a lot of their own future. If you put a lot of work in and are strategic, you can carve your own path forward, but there will still be external stuff out of your control that you can’t sweat over and will have to power through. Differentiating the two is crucial. But if there is something you can improve on that will impact your outcomes going forward, make sure you address that vs. incorrectly think it’s something you can’t control. Once you know what you can and cannot control you’ll be able to shape the path you want.
17) In hindsight you’ll realize you asked dumb questions/cared about the wrong stuff: You may realize over a few years that you panicked over stuff that didn’t matter. Try not to sweat it. It’s all part of the process. The stuff you read on WSO isn’t the bible. Just remember to be fair and helpful when an intern a few years from now has the same level of naivety and comes to you to learn.
18) Don’t beat yourself up over mistakes: I still vividly recall dumb mistakes I made as an intern/first year analyst. Hell, I still remember the dumb mistakes I made in middle school! It’s easier said than done, but try not to be too hard on yourself. It’s important to learn from mistakes, but make sure you learn to forgive yourself.
19) Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get the offer: This doesn’t mean you’re a flawed human. You may not have been ready yet, the standards of the firm may be unrealistically high, or (more likely than not) they may not actually have the ability to hire a full-time analyst and just wanted a cheap intern. Also, in 2023/2024 – the market sucks. M&A is grinding to a halt and high interest rates are hurting economic activity. Hell, the bank you intern at may not exist in a year. One job will not define you. If there are mistakes you think you can improve on, then recognize what they are and adapt.
20) It’s just a job. All this aside, remember, it’s just a job, not your life. A job is only a way to drive cash flow to fund your livelihood. That is it. You are young, you are energized, you are fungible – you will figure it out even if the path seems unclear sometimes.
That’s all! Best of luck!

2023.05.31 11:27 KKshilling Advice For Interns

Advice For Interns
Nailing Your Summer Finance Internship

I didn’t bother correcting them, figuring it’s funnier to let them keep making the same mistake, and they looked like an idiot when they got it wrong in front of other people near the end of their internship.

Get the job!

https://preview.redd.it/26wl522yf63b1.png?width=547&format=png&auto=webp&s=bc9249d0a23f5945f4bbf310e71323242073e58f

Ik I should probably post this in the call of duty modern warfare sub but only the dc fans might get this. With the recent 2019 reboot of modern warfare is it possible that captain price caused a flashpoint after the 2011 mw3 in efforts to reverse the effects of ww3 and thus the events of modern warfare(2019) and modern warfare 2(2022) transpire?

Chicago Sees Deadliest Memorial Day Weekend In 8 Years Despite Hundreds Of Yellow-Vested 'Peacekeepers' In Streets WARNING - VIDEO OF ROBBERY
This Memorial Day weekend in Chicago was the deadliest the Democrat-run and crime-plagued city has seen in eight years, the Chicago Sun-Times has reported Tuesday.
https://chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2023/5/27/23739457/memorial-day-weekend-chicago-shootings-violence
One killing even happened close to Mayor Brandon Johnson's own residence. Going back to Friday evening, "at least 11 people had been killed and another 46 wounded since early Friday evening" resulting in a death toll that was the "highest since 2015, when 12 people were killed," according to the report. This marks 57 total casualties across the city from either shootings or knifings.

The newspaper records that the prior high came in 2016: "The total number shot, however, was still far below the 71 people wounded by gunfire over the 2016 holiday weekend," it notes.

Last year's Memorial Day weekend had marked a 5-year high. For the 2022 holiday weekend, 51 people total had ben reported shot, including 9 killed.

The eight-year high in deaths occurred despite that ahead of the weekend community activists had planned peace marches. The idea was that yellow-vested 'peacekeepers' would fan out and have a prominent presence in "hot spots" where violence is frequent in the south and west sides of the city. The marches and activism appeared to have little effect.

The initial Friday homicides reportedly happened within a few hours of each other, and included shootings and stabbings.

As for violent incidents which happened near the mayor's home, the Sun-Times details:

The homicide near the mayor’s Austin neighborhood home was discovered just after midnight Saturday in the 5700 block of West Chicago Avenue. A female, whose age was unknown, was stabbed to death and left in a nearby alley. And Monday evening, a shooting was reported about five blocks from the mayor’s home. A man, 36, was shot near the street around 7 p.m. in the 700 block of North Pine Avenue. He was hospitalized in good condition.

As for the peacekeeping initiative, it is actually part of a formal initiative which has state funding, and has included 500 people having been hired and undergone training in conflict de-escalation. Last week into the weekend they had a presence in 102 “hot spots” in 14 Chicago communities.

However, judging by the tragic weekend statistics - which not only matched but surpassed similar deadly weekends - there appears to have been a somewhat fruitless exercise in optics, at least for the warm holiday weekend. But other metrics suggest and the program leaders themselves say that in some locales the program has been effective.

So how many people from Chicago are moving to Door County?
I guess the real question is whether people moving from Chicago to Door County will still vote for the same failed woke policies that made that city a 3rd world hell-scape.
Time will tell...

2023.05.31 10:37 RoseGoldRe I miss the vibes that the early-mid 2000-2010's had + Bike Karen rant as example

I don't mean that I miss the regressive politics, or that I miss the lack of technology, but rather, I miss the sense of just... things advancing.
I remember being optimistic about life back in those years.
I remember thinking, "wow, look at how technology is advancing! I can't wait to see what happens!"
And instead, I am bombarded with ads everywhere.
I'm bombarded with click-bait videos, not from stupid corporations, but from just regular people.
I'm bombarded with fucking TikTok ads, and then if it's not the damn ads, it's a video on something stupid that happened and somebody filming it on TikTok or whatever for clout, for "views" or "clicks" or "subs" or whatever.
There was something freeing about living in those years, and I think it was due to the fact that technology for connection existed in just the right way, where, people could connect, communicate, and be part of the world around them, WITHOUT feeling as if time is running out, or, I'm going to miss the boat for one thing or the other, or that, if I don't do THIS THING RIGHT NOW, I'll be forever stuck in this loser-esque mindset.
Now, I do have amnesia, I do have trauma, etc, and I'm sure that plays a role in things, but, with having amnesia from 2015-2022, I feel like things are "new". I am like, "wait, that's a thing?"
It's just fucking weird to me.
People doing these stupid dances, influencers, like, it's fucking weird to me.
I am sick to fucking death of people assuming that every interaction that isn't 100% smooth or going well is GROOMING or SUS or THAT HAPPENED or
I'm sick of people just assuming that a guy doing one thing is automatically grounds for being a creep. I'm sick to death of people assuming every single time a white woman cries for help, that it's to harm the other party.
Like, with that stupid Bike Karen bullshit. This literally is what I'm talking about. Like, the woman got off a 12 hour shift and was six months pregnant. According to how the bikes work, if the bike is DOCKED, then that means that the bike belongs to NOBODY. She was on the damn bike, and then all these other people are SURROUNDING her.
Let's actually do a thought experiment: if the boys were white, should she have called for help? If she was a black woman and the boys were also black, should she have called for help? If the race were different in any capacity, should she have called for help?
Like, I don't know what the fuck people think that other people are thinking when they get off a 12 hour shift at six months pregnant, but like, how the fuck was she supposed to know those boys were still minors? Seriously, how? And furthermore, how the fuck was she supposed to respond when she's got several larger dudes, never mind their race, but just bigger dudes, surrounding her and calling her horrific shit and telling her that her "baby comes out retarded".
Like, I legitimately don't know what you wanted her to do if she was actually a victim.
Also, for the question of "why would somebody film them doing something like that?!"... are you fucking joking? People are ALWAYS filming dumb shit they're doing. There was just a video of some kids lighting fireworks in a fucking bus. People are fucking stupid, and that logic extends even further when the people are minors/children.
Furthermore, why would some woman go and get herself into trouble, possibly lose her job, just to, harass people over a bike? Harass a group of bigger dudes, nevermind their age, but like, over a bike??? Sure, I guess it's also possible, and that's gross that it's possible, but I just feel like she really didn't mean to do something like that that could put her job and life at risk, that's ridiculous.
And then, lastly, how the fuck do you know if her tears were fake or real? Are you in her shoes? Have you never been so burnt out you cry, and then the tears just fucking STOP because you're exhausted? Like, this honestly was probably a huge misunderstanding or a fucking miscommunication, or, maybe just straight up bullying, and I'll give it to you that maybe she's making shit up, but, I just find that soooo difficult to believe that a woman who is a nurse, who is 6 months preggo, who just got off a 12 hour shift, is going to try to steal a bike from a group of dudes, nevermind their race.
It's ridiculous.
Like, there are crazy fucking people out there, yes, but I feel like since everybody has a damn keyboard and whatnot, they're like, "Oh, I know soo well because I know somebody that knew somebody that had this thing happen to them, and this sounds like that!"
Like, no two court cases are the same because the facts always differ. The same can be said about social interactions.
IDK, it's just so stupid to me.
I miss where a misunderstanding was simply that, a "oh shit, I didn't realize".
And like, idk, in the 2000s-2010s, people actually looked shit up.
Like, have any of you ever watched "We Didn't Start The Flame War" by College Humor? If not, fucking watch that video.
It's like, these Andrew Tate fans are like, "gross, I'm so much better than you, so much smarter!" but then they believe everything that sob says. It's disgusting. Also, Andrew Tate is fucking ugly as fuck. And sure, maybe he'd be cute, but his personality prevented him from having any positive associations with his face. He's disgusting. A rapist. And a human trafficker. And these young men who are in crisis eat his shit up, and it's disgusting. He's a fucking predator and a groomer, IRL, but he goes both ways.
He preys on insecure men and grooms them into thinking they need to buy his "product", and his "product" is a bunch of women he has forbidden from seeing the outside world. All these fucking people just go on and on about "WHERE'S THE PROOF!" and I'm like, have you even listened to the girls speak? Have you listened to the voice mail messages he's left? Have you ever even watched his shit, other than his podcasts? Like, are you serious?
And then, we have fucking boomers who believe fucking everything they see because their brains are rotted from lead paint and lead gasoline.
And then these Elon Musk stans who find him to be so cool or whatever because he bought Tesla or something?? Like?? Okay?? I could've said the same shit about Steve Jobs or Bill Gates!
And we have nazi's again, rebranding themselves as fucking "Patriots". Sure, a patriot so much so that you're willing to ban people from having their own freedom to enjoy life and love who they want because it confuses you or goes against god or whatever the fuck dumb reason you have because you can't stop thinking about sex between other people.
And this trans-shit, like, are you serious? Let people be themselves. Nobody is "mutilating children", that's just not happening. Women who were born with vagina's can't even get a fucking abortion when they're going to die from complications, or their own uterus removed when they don't want kids, and you believe this narrative that children are allowed to have their sexual reproductive organs messed with? Fucking lunacy.
It's like, there's climate change going on, and IDK if that's why people are going after low-hanging fruit/arguments that are dumb as fuck, because it's some collective fear or whatever, but it's fucking stupid. Worry about the damn planet. Worry about politicians that are trying to tell you about "woke" shit or whatever and then take money from political donors to enrich themselves, worry about Florida sinking into the fucking ocean instead of drag shows in Florida, because if Florida does go underwater (and it will in due time), you're not going to have any drag shows anyway.
And maybe this is just a natural progression with technology and communication and connection, globally, to see all this dumb shit, but I feel like people need to "touch grass" and literally take a fucking hike, breath in the air, do some goddamn meditation, watch a show, but don't binge it, take your time, slow the fuck down in life, put things into context and perspective.
You're going to be dead in 100 years, max, and if all you did was bitch about drag shows and binge idk, whatever the new fucking show is, and call people groomers and what the fuck ever, you're going to be a miserable fuck when you're older, and you're going to sound paranoid as all get out to the Alpha generation, who is seriously going to think, "thanks Gen-Z parents for screaming groomers when you could have LITERALLY been screaming about climate change, which, BTW, is going to affect us even MORE than it's affecting you!" And then they'll look at Milennials, and be all, "goddamn, y'all got fucked over and went the same damn way as Gen-X, even though Gen-X likes to pretend they're an outlier because they want to feel like they have control over something in life," meanwhile, boomers will be dead AF and Alpha generations will be like, "I wonder what it was like to live in a time where technology wasn't in your face all the time, and you actually had union jobs and went into work."
Like, idk, generations reflect on previous generations, to what extent is up to each individual person, but it's like, I just want to go back to where I wasn't stressed out as fuck about shit.
Like, my cat, right now is watching me type, she watches how fast my fingers move and watches the letters appear on the screen. It's cute as fuck, she watches it and jumps like it's a printer, and I find that adorable.
I try to take in the little things, and I'm sure you, the reader, you do as well, but I think a lot more than other people, I personally feel, and maybe that's because I'm autistic, not diagnosed yet because I can't afford the $3000 fee attached to an adult diagnosis, but, I've seen numerous health care professionals, it's a goddamn joke how many I've seen, and for the ones that I've brought this up to, they're like, "Oh, yeah, I can't give you a diagnosis, but, if I had to guess, yes, you are on the spectrum."
And IDK, maybe that's why I think too fucking much, who the hell knows, I don't know. I just want things to not be so fucking high strung, I want people to listen, to use context clues, to incorporate nuance into their arguments, to try and think of how other people might think of something, and to incorporate that into their viewpoints, to give people the benefit of the doubt when there's a lacking of sufficient evidence (bike karen), and to make their judgements of shitty things and people based off all the shit that said individual has said (Tate).
Like, christ dude, I just want to come home, watch some fucking anime, write a goddamn story, read some Stephen King, look at a stupid youtube video, and not be bombarded with ads and politicians feeding bullshit to their audience. Use some fucking facts and evidence.
Seek out evidence, people. Seek truth, stop vilifying, and just, idk... make an informed decision and stop saying shit like, "OH THAT'S LITERALLY WHAT IT IS, NGL, CAUSE NO, LIKE, I KNEW SOMEBODY WHO DID THAT, AND THAT'S TOTALLY WHAT THEY'RE DOING!" It's fucking ridiculous.
I don't know where the fuck I'm going with this, I have the flu.

2023.05.31 08:28 yolo420blazedeeznuts [Music festivals] The unofficial Glastonbury festival forum - a cultural behemoth, a tyrannical owner, and the 'spirit of the festival all year round' - a recent history

The Glastonbury Festival
For those of you who don't know it, the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is the biggest music festival in the UK, and one of the longest running. Since its first iteration in 1970 (preceded by the Bath Festival in 1969) it has become a cultural touchstone in the UK. While the mainstream may still be interested in more traditional affairs like the royalty, queuing or scones and tea, for the others music festivals have led the way for the counter culture.
In its early days, when dairy farmer and all round nice guy Michael Eavis organised the festival at his farm (Worthy Farm) located near the town of Glastonbury once a year and tickets were £1, the festival was naturally (and fairly) associated with soap-dodging crusties, a reputation that has evolved over the years. In the eighties the travelling community used the farm as a base and the festival took on an anti-Thatcher edge. During the 90s the festival became known for seminal sets from up-and-coming British bands and pushing dance music into the spotlight, but its popularity attracted more and more people each year, most of who were not paying for tickets and instead hopping over the flimsy fence as security did nothing to stop them.
By 2000, the local council had had enough, and ruled that the festival take exceptional security measures to be granted a licence. A 'super-fence' was created, and the festival got back to focusing on music, albeit when it wasn't being hit by record rainfalls twice in two years. In 2008, a combination of two years of campsite floods and underwhelming headliners meant that tickets didn't sell out until the first day of the festival and the future of Glastonbury looked to be in doubt. Yet a headline set by Jay Z (goaded on by Noel Gallagher) helped change the festival's fortunes, and every year that it has run since then (it takes a year off to fallow the fields every five or so years and didn't run during the pandemic) it has sold out its tickets on the day that they went on sale. It is now arguably in a stronger place than it has ever been, with over 100 stages, 1000s of performers including musicians, theatre, opera, comedy, dance, and art, and about 210,000 people on site over the course of its five days still overseen by Michael Eavis, although his daughter Emily Eavis is in charge these days.
A festival is nothing without its attendees, and among the general Glastobury festival attendees are a passionate, dedicated and obsessive cohort. Many of this cohort have been going to the festival for decades, and each year their rank is joined by new, younger members who attend the festival for the first time and see just what is so magical about it. Like any pop culture icon, the fans of Glastonbury congregated online, and that place was eFestivals.
eFestivals - the unofficial Glastonbury forum
eFestivals was founded in 1998 by owner Neil (his username is Neil, I'm not doxxing him) - more on him later. The site was essentially set up as a news source on music festivals around the UK and abroad. It was set up before the official Glastonbury website. News would include general information about various upcoming festivals, announcements of artists' tours, and rumoured acts appearing at the festivals. It was the latter that was eFests' unique strength, thanks to connections that Neil had with various booking agents around the UK. News of headline acts that were supposed to remain secret for weeks or months often leaked out at eFests, which attracted a lot of followers in the early days of widely accessible internet.
As many sites of a similar ilk did around the same time, eFests started a forum as a place for its visitors to sign up and discuss their favourite festivals. Very quickly the Glastonbury subforum became the most popular section of the website, and remains so to this day. While other subforums attracted a lot of footfall at times, the year-round post count on the Glastonbury forum drove the visitor numbers to eFests through the roof as the hardcore Glastonbury fans found their home between festivals. As the banner on the forum promises, eFestivals would let you 'Experience the spirit of Glastonbury all year round, a place for general chat about the Festival.'
The normal times
Now, I am going to skip forward here. I only started visiting eFestivals around 2014, so there is a lot of history that I am not familiar with. What is clear though, is that between 1998 and 2014 Neil was the pre-eminent source of reliable information on artists performing, and particularly the headline acts, at Glastonbury. His information was right almost all of the time, and the forum users lapped it up. In fact, they lapped it up so much that they generally turned a blind eye to his somewhat hardline moderation.
Like any popular forum, there were big names that could dominate conversation. On eFests, these included Crazyfool01, an obsessive known for his fancy dress; russycaps, an obsessive known for his aggressive trolling and later his imgur account; the Nal, a older veteran obsessed with trolling in the threads on weather; Bamber, a poster aggressively obsessed with female pop acts and their looks; and Matt42, a newer member obsessed with being aggressively wrong about most things. There were many others too, a true mix of old veterans, always complaining that the festival wasn't as good as it was in the 80s/90s/00s; middle aged music fans arguing about how Kasabian were an awful choice for headliner or how Foals were ready to step up; and newcomers who had never been, seeking advice on where to camp or how much drink to take.
The trouble begins
The forum was going from strength to strength but around 2018 Neil (who had almost exclusively been the sole moderator) started to get the banhammer out more frequently. He wasn't happy about the amount of in jokes, Simpsons references and off topic threads that would dominate the forum in long stretches between festivals and official announcements. One small group, dubbed the 'wacky banter crew' by Neil, were viewed as the source of the forums' problems. Eventually many of them were banned, in what was seen as an unnecessary move by many. They all rejoined with different names.
It was also around this time that Neil's information appeared to be getting less reliable year on year. Whereas before he had been able to share details of many of the acts due to play the festival months ahead of official announcements, by 2019 Neil was generally as well informed as the average forum user. Although he would get the occasional tip off, often these were on acts that users already had knowledge of. In fact, it became apparent that a number of forum users had better sources and connections with the music industry than Neil. Neil would often dispute their information, but the users would be proved correct more often than not. Nowhere was this more apparent than when Neil confidently stated in 2022 that Nightmares on Wax would be headlining the West Holts stage on the Sunday, much to the bemusement of many. When the line up dropped, Nightmares on Wax were in fact third on the bill, a whole five steps down from headliner.
After Brexit in 2016 politics also seeped more and more into the forum, which is understandable given the left leaning stance of the festival and many of its attendees. For most, opposing Brexit and the Tories was standard, but some users instigated arguments about the state of the country that could takeover threads in an instant. Neil would often join in with these arguments, taking what can politely be referred to as a 'right wing' view point, while maintaining that he was anti-Conservative.
Looking back, by October 2019 the forum, while still attracting users and hundreds of posts a day, was clearly heading toward melting point. In the ticket sale for the 2020 festival that month, fancy dress obsessive Crazyfool01, like many others, was not successful in getting himself a ticket. For a man who made his entire personality the festival, this was the end of the world. In a thread that was deleted not long after, he lamented how his pain in not getting a ticket was worse than anyone else's, which earned him the ire of other ticketless users angry that he was monopolising the communal disappointment and that he shouldn't be so entitled. For balance, I should point out that Crazyfool01 is very, very popular among many of the forum's users, and one of Neil's most loyal fans. He was seen by many to be most influential user on the site and a poster boy of the friendly Glastonbury-goer image.
Crazyfool01 would continue to post about his ticketless situation daily, and launched initiatives to help as many people as possible in the upcoming resale, although cynics would say that was entirely motivated out of his own pursuit of a ticket. Hundreds of others had been ticketless in years previous, but he had never put so much effort in the resales. Soon enough he had a huge number of forum users to help him secure a ticket in the resale as part of this. Some users suggested that he volunteer at the festival as a way in, but he refused. He also discussed his idea of going to the homes of the festival bosses at Christmas to beg for a ticket, although thankfully he was talked out of this. Although the pandemic would see the 2020 and 2021 iterations of the festival cancelled, Crazyfool01 would eventually have a ticket bought for him in the resale for the 2022 festival.
The pandemic years were probably the darkest time for the forum, and for the festival itself, which was apparently close to bankruptcy. As users had to wait longer than usual for their Glastonbury fix, there was nothing festival-related to talk about, and the politics that had crept into the forum was amplified as conversation turned to the rights and wrongs of lockdowns, facemasks and other contentious issues. There were a number of megathreads on covid (Neil would delete them occasionally) that were full of arguments, personal attacks, hot takes and general desperation about the situation. Users organised social skype meets during lockdown to give them something to do, and they were about as awkward as you would expect.
It was some time in 2021 that Neil had some serious health problems. I don't know the specific details, but it had a significant impact on his way of life and, unfortunately, his approach to moderating and posting on the forum. Crazyfool01 took it upon himself to quietly organise a whipround to raise some money to gift to Neil so that he could afford a electric scooter to get around the festival site for the upcoming festival in 2022. Neil and his wife found out about the money by reading user PMs, accepted the money, never said thank you, and later said that they didn't need the money. Add on to this some severely transphobic comments that Neil made, and his reputation was well and truly sullied, a matter complicated by his ill health.
The split
It was in this context that the first great split happened in May 2022, less than two months ahead of the first Glastonbury festival since 2019. Neil's moderation was too aggressive for many users as he sought to remove 'troll' posts, and then users. Some users were identified by Neil as being part of the 'wacky banter crew', but their posts were part of the normal festival discourse, and were in no way trolling. In particular, Neil found out that previously banned user 'Gucci Piggy' was going by the username 'Somto Unigwe Raphael', and was furious that this seemed to be common knowledge.
Neil banned the account of Hugh Jass for the crime of knowing that Gucci was Somto (as did 90% of other regular users) and shit hit the fan. Users were outraged that one of the forum's most popular users had had their account removed, despite not doing anything to antagonise Neil or being in any way affiliated with the WBC. A war of words ensued, with the highest profile victim being Matt42, who was branded a 'cuck' by Neil, while some other innocent bystanders were banned. It was clear that this was a step too far as users who normally turned a blind eye to Neil's tyranny called out this move as incorrect. The users not loyal to Neil were even angrier, and some said that they would be leaving the site. It turned out not to be an empty threat.
Almost instantly a discord server (named Other Fests) was set up by the WBC, and the link began to circulate around the Efestivals forums. Within a week of the discord starting it had over 500 members. It was a chaotic place in the beginning, with many users unfamiliar with discord and confused by the faster moving conversations. Amid users trying to continue their usual Glastonbury chats, conversation was dominated by slagging off Neil and eFestivals users that didn't make the move, and bemoaning leaving the forum. Able to speak freely for the first time without the risk of being banned, a lot of posts were made in anger, with many declaring that they would never go back to eFests.
To the surprise of many, including Neil, who had declared that people had tried to set up rival forums before and failed, Other Fests was successful. People were happy with the move and didn't miss eFests. Glastonbury festival always happens at the end of June, so the months of May and June were always the busiest months on eFestivals. This proved to be the case for the discord too. While the 'eFestivals drama' thread quickly became the most popular thread, other discussions about the festival (and other festivals) were just as busy as, if not busier that, the old forum thanks to the new format. On eFests the difference was noticeable. During this period there would normally have been thousands of posts a day, but in 2022 there was barely any activity at all.
Users still loyal to Neil remained on eFests, preaching Neil's gospel that the rebellion would fail, and the traitors would eventually come crawling back. Due to the bad blood and barbed words being traded, the annual eFests Glastonbury meet was not officially organised, although some users did meet up on site at the usual place and time. The 2022 festival happened, and once the post-festival reviews and hot takes had happened, it seemed that the new way of life had set in: a much quieter, less popular eFestivals forum had the historical importance but tainted reputation; and the up-and-coming OtherFests discord, where the emphasis was on not being as bad as eFests. Everyone seemed happy.
Then something strange happened. The discord disappeared. While traffic had certainly dropped off after the 2022 festival, this was usual for that time of year. There was no obvious reason as to why it was deleted. Although I haven't been able to find the exact reason, it seems like the original creator JLeather had some doubts about the exercise around October or November 2022, so deleted everything.
Confused, many users ended up reluctantly going back to eFests, while others ended up on reddit and some just didn't do anything. The traitors reintegrated to eFests, many still unhappy about having to be there. This continued on for a few months, and then, in January 2023, a second discord, 'OtherOtherFests' (OOF) was founded.
The second, permanent split
This time aroundon discord there was a bigger moderation team, a clear purpose (to exist alongside eFests, not in spite of eFests), and a set of principles that users were asked to adhere to (be nice). OOF also had a softer launch than the original discord - there was no particular event that sparked its necessity, which meant that user numbers built slowly. As the link circulated, many eFests refugees moved back over the discord, with some saying that they would be using both sites.
As this was quietly happening in the background of eFests, the foreground was dominated again by Neil. In late 2022 BraveSirRobin, a user with always reliable sources, posted in the Headliners 2023 thread that he had solid information that Guns 'N Roses would be headlining the festival in 2023. While rumours like this are to be taken with a pinch of salt, BSR was known to be one of the most reliable sources of Glastonbury information. Many users were upset at the prospect of their festival hosting GNR, particularly given their up and down live performances, reputation, and the fact that they didn't really fit in with the ethos of the festival. No one was more upset than Neil. He refused to accept the rumour as viable, and would disrupt any conversation on the matter to say that it was a made up rumour and that he would not be going to Glastonbury if GNR were announced.
As Neil's rants were becoming more and more unhinged, the link to the discord server was circulated more, and greater numbers of users shifted over to OOF. Occasionally the link was posted in the open after a particularly bad rant, and Neil got wind that he had a rival again. As he was increasingly erratically, (such as banning the word 'discord' in PMs), users encouraged him to stop and to at least appoint another moderator to help him out. Crazyfool01 made it his mission to become that moderator, and after a private campaign, Neil eventually made him one, doubling the size of the moderator team.
In March GNR were announced on the first official poster and the fallout on eFests was toxic. The majority of users saw it as a poor booking and indicative of a poor line up. BSR asked Neil for an apology over the abuse he received for (correctly) predicting GNR and Neil belligerently refused to do so, doubling down on his insults and stating that he would be returning his ticket due to GNR being booked.
It was not long after this that Neil posted more transphobic bile (bizarrely related to GNR), and despite being asked to remove his post, he kept going. Users were disgusted that Neil was continuing to post hate speech on the Glastonbury forum, a festival that is supposed to be for everyone. By the time Neil stopped his transphobic posts, he had driven a huge number of previously loyal users over to Discord and had Crazyfool01 resign as moderator. Crazyfool01 even joined the discord after negotiations with the mods, posting on both sites.
OOF was now in rude health, with users taking part in world cups of crisps and biscuits and trading all sorts of solid line up information (on the agreement that it would not be leaked to eFests). Very quickly it had over 1000 members and this time it didn't buckle. While the eFestivals drama thread still attracted a lot of attention, users sensed that eFests' days were limited and many campaigned for other users to stop slagging off users loyal to Neil and to make it a welcoming place for them. The mods frequently discussed whether to delete the drama thread, as there was no need for it any more. Almost every single time they had that debate there would some new drama on eFests (such as Neil being transphobic again, user Kalifire sending abusive messages to a young woman, Crazyfool01 quitting the discord after being politely asked to stop recruiting members back to eFests, or Russycarps returning from the dead) that would reignite the chatter as users gathered to watch the unfolding binfire.
That brings us to the present. eFests is looking like it is about to have its life support turned off, and the OOF discord is attracting the vast majority online Glastonbury-related chatter, and has a far more active community. It even got its unofficial flag into Yves Tumor's promotional material. This has all come about thanks to one man. Neil built eFestivals from the ground when websites were still a confusing and new technology. He amassed a loyal following and cultivated the best online space for UK and European music festivals out there. His change in behaviour over years however, is yet another example of someone not dying a hero, and instead becoming the villain. Where either site goes from here is unclear, but it's hard to see eFests recovering given that its greatest assets - its users and its reliable line up information - now belong to the discord.
Addendum - new ownership
Between the time that I started writing this and finishing it, arguably the most significant event of eFests 25 year history occurred. Neil sold the site. He had said several months ago that he was looking to sell it, but no one realistically thought that a) he would get a price that he was happy with or b) that he would be able to relinquish control. It was announced a few weeks ago that the sale had gone through, with someone going by the name 'Iggy Makarov' taking ownership of the site. Users scattered for clues of who this mysterious figure was, with some detective work on OOF suggesting that he was a crypto-bro.
Days later Neil couldn't refuse one final piece of drama, almost as this post was being written. Crazyfool01 (him again) started a thread for the 'official' eFests meet to take place at Glastonbury 2023. Within a few posts Neil arrived, and attacked his most loyal servant for making the meet 'all about him' (hilariously by posting a McFly video). Neil continued attacking Crazyfool01 and stated that the 'official' eFests meet wasn't the one that Crazyfool01 had announced, but would be taking place in the same bar, at the same time, as Crazyfool01's unofficial meet. (Neil never did return his ticket to this year's festival like he said he would for months and months.)
It was in this context that Iggy, the new site owner, appeared for the first time. He described himself as an ad man, and wasn't initially looking to make a profit from the forum. Users on both eFests and OOF were suspicious of his motives (he claimed to have never been to a festival), but everyone was glad that Neil's reign of terror was finally over. We end on an optimistic note, hoping that eFests and OOF can co-exists, waiting to see what Iggy will do.
Author's note
I know that a lot of hobby dramas are posted with receipts, but unfortunately in this case it hasn't been possible, mostly because I never kept any of the old days, and if I ask those who might have them, I doxx myself. I'm sure that there are slight inaccuracies in the above account of events, so if anyone wants to PM me to correct me, I will happily do so.
I hope I have given everyone a fair write up - I use both sites and see the merits of each. I recognise that Neil comes out of this badly, and that the issue is complicated by his health issues. I can assure you that he has always behaved like this (since I have been part of the online Glastonbury community at least).
Thank you to the mods of this sub for their patience and help in making sure that it adheres to the rules.
See you on the farm.
