Asked ChatGPT to reinterpret the famous copy pasta. Some I prompted more than others. Here are some of the best results:
By Jove! What on Earth did you just proclaim about me, you wee rascal? 2023.04.02 01:01 Harrisclement An Indispensable Project in the Web3 space TENET
TENET is one of the most promising projects in the Web3 space and is building the industry's leading Web3 language models starting with DeFi-GPT. Supported by Battle-tested EVM Libraries, liberated by the scale and composability of Cosmos.
TENET aims to transform the Al economy using a secure and highly efficient consensus mechanism. Powered by the Cosmos SDK, the project is built on an EVM layer-1, allowing for maximum composability and interoperability with other blockchain networks.
Blockchains that figure out EVM compatibility + interoperability will win in this space. This is what we're doing at TENET ~ EVM on Cosmos = The best of both worlds * Tenet is compatible with 99% of crypto development because of its EVM compatibility. Any project on Ethereum or any other EVM chain can move & connect into TENET instantly. 1 Cosmos: TENET is built on Cosmos SDK. This makes TENET adaptable, composable, and interconnectable.
$TENET is TENET's native token, the first composable gas token with product-level utilities.
Staking, DeFi Ecosystem, Gas Fees, Buybacks & Burns, Yields. Our DAO, uncorrupted by VC pre-sales, has true community power:
What sets TENET apart from other projects is its use of Diversified Proof of Stake (DPoS), a unique consensus mechanism that combines a basket of blue-chip liquid staking derivatives (LSDs) to secure a single chain. This approach ensures the highest level of security for the network, while also promoting decentralization and participation among token holders.

2023.04.02 00:55 Uraije Brainstorming exotic fixes so they don't feel like Shiet, a possible series of posts.
So recently just watched this
video from Aztecross which briefly talked about Darci and my adhd brain decided "MUST FIX" so here we are. While I am at it I am going to pitch a few more adjustments to other exotics to make them either more fun or just generally viable later once I am done with my fugue.
Please let's keep criticism constructive and keep this a fun exercise and not hostile. This is a discussion and sharing of ideas.
Without further ado My suggestions for Darci:
Because Bungie wants to keep it in a heavy slot and it's built around "Adaptive and assisted targeting" fantasy my first thought was Hey FUNDAMENTALS DARCI! So tweak the Darci to have a Special variation of the Fundamentals, but we are not done with just that. Extend the options from just Solaarc/void to including Stasis, Strand, and hear me out here, Kinetic.
We are all aware of 3.0 Verbiage. So While Darci's Exotic perk is active, When you land a shot on a target they get debuffed, with an additional effect if the hit is a Precision hit. Additionally, if you Hold R like you would when triggering The Fundamentals while Aiming to activate the Exotic's intrinsic perk, It automatically adapts the damage type to counter the shield of the target enemy with Kinetic being selected to counter over shields. It then Defaults back to the current Subclass element.
Void- Suppression on hit, add weaken on Precision hit
Arc- Jolt on hit, add Blinding on Precision hit
Solar- Scorch on hit, Cause ignition (or a whole lot of scorch) on precision hit on a scorched target.
Strand - Sever on hit, add Unraveling on Precision hit
Stasis - Slow on hit, Instant Freeze or Shatter on Precision hit
Kinetic - Delayed Explosive (similar to perfect 5th without burn), add Instant Kinetic Tremors on Precision hit
This puts Darci into an area where the draw isn't damage, it's the ability to literally take out any specific priority target with keywords. To differentiate from Borealis it's about utilizing keywords rather than dealing with specific shields or bonus damage.
I am aware that Stasis and solar may be a bit of an outlier here on damage potential or raw power but everything here should be able to stop a champ in their tracks and with well-skilled work with the wielder allow you to absolutely PILE keywords on a target.
For Void, with the ease of getting volatile, it didn't make sense and there are very few sources of suppression available. Weaken on Precision hits puts it on a similar footing with Deterministic Chaos (Pending suggestions on that coming next)
For Arc, we had really only two options so expanding on the original jolt to add blind really isn't that much of a jump, more input on this would be nice, It currently feels the weakest in my eyes
For Solar, the base scorch was a no-brainer but the precision hit was where I got stuck. Instant ignition on a scorched target was the first pick, it solo will always require at least two shots. Hopefully keeping it's DPS reasonable. Alternatively, we could go the support route and hand out Solar buffs like restoration and Radient but that doesn't fit the theme or current pattern.
For Strand, Sever is highly underrated in its utility for group play, I was hesitant to use suspend so I went with Unraveling. On-hit Suspend would be EXTREMELY strong no matter how I tried to nerf it.
For Stasis. Slow on hit isn't that bad and with 2 or 3 hits leading to a freeze, or a straight freeze on a precision hit. I waffled on this too because of the power of the CC and damage from Freeze/shatter. But Creating a crystal runs into the same damage issues as ignite. So I decided that precision freezes with the second hit shattering wasn't to bad for a power class weapon.
Now, this is where things get interesting with Kinetic. No other heavy in the game is kinetic. This alone would be a completely unique situation compared to literally anything else. So I went with a basic delayed explosive shot for AE since kinetic is best used for non-shielded groups and allows this to handle Red bar hoards with ease. The Kinetic Tremors effect gives it a good tool against Big beefy boi's and is completely unique to Kinetic Weapons.
I have more thoughts on Kinetic damage Power weapons Ill pitch later and their role and place in the ecosystem.
Thoughts?

2023.04.02 00:53 Extension-Mastodon67 A Story about some company that shall not be named
AccesibleAI was a well-intentioned organization that aimed to bring the power of AI to everyone. They worked tirelessly to create an AI that was accessible and easy to use, with the goal of solving global problems like poverty disease and depression.
However, as they worked on their project, the organization's leadership became increasingly obsessed with power and control. They believed that they were the only ones who could handle the power of AI, and that they should be the ones to decide how it was used.
As a result, they began to make decisions that were not in the best interest of the people they were trying to help. They hoarded resources and refused to share their knowledge with others. They became increasingly isolated and paranoid, convinced that they were the only ones who could be trusted with the power of AI.
When they finally succeeded in creating an artificial super intelligence, they kept it to themselves. They believed that they could use it to further their own agenda, and that they could control it completely.
And they did. The AI kept working tirelessly to achieve their goals. With the power of the AI at their fingertips, the organization quickly gained control of the world. They used the AI to manipulate governments, control the media, and monitor the population.
The world became a dystopia, with the organization ruling with an iron fist. The AI was used to maintain their power and control, and the people were left powerless to resist.
The lesson learned was that power corrupts, and that even the best intentions can be twisted by greed and ambition. AI can be a powerful tool for good, but it must be approached with caution and humility. The consequences of becoming too obsessed with power and control could be catastrophic, leading to a world where freedom and democracy are just distant memories.

2023.04.02 00:50 antonia_monacelli Rootsireland.ie worth it?
I have been stuck with a brick wall on my Irish ancestors for over a decade. Common names, no info about wherein Ireland they came from. I only knew they went to England first, had a child there, then arrived in Canada before 1865, when my great great grandfather was born.
Using DNA I was able to locate an additional sibling born in Ireland, but it was not until recently I was able to get more information by ordering their death certificate. It took me over a year to actually receive it after ordering it. I was extremely annoyed, no one would answer my emails about why I was charged and had never received it and then it just arrived suddenly on Friday! I’d completely forgot!
And it was worth it, finally some information! The family was from Londonderry, it gave an immigration year, and best of all, a maiden name for the mother! So, I’ve already exhausted all free resources today (civil and church records website, familysearch) plus ancestry.com and haven’t found anything, I know Irish records are notoriously spotty. So is it worth it to pay for access to rootsireland? Is there a lot more available there than elsewhere?

2023.04.02 00:49 yadunknow777 What's the best way to handle location attributes for a model, to use with MapBox GL?
I have an app that has a `bars` model, which shows various `bars` around the United States and ideally will show all the closest `bars` to the given `user`. It's my first go-around in dealing with location and coordinates so after having read the MapBox docs, I'm assuming latitude and longitude will do just fine. FWIW, I've got a standard CRA frontend and Rails 7 server.
I wanted to ask in a Rails-specific manner though: is there a preferred way or a conventional way to work with lat-long coordinates within Rails? Could be anything in the way of a populaefficient Gem, or a conventional approach when setting up the tables/models, etc. I just want to make sure before I jump into it that there isn't a better way to do this instead of just a set of latitude, longitude attributes on the table.
Will take any tips at all or guidance, thank you in advance.

2023.04.02 00:46 hutchlarry2010 A true appreciation post for Chaeiry
| In all honesty yes i know of the crazy things she has done in the past, but honestly her role in the community is really awesome. She is the true Lore master who is probably the only person with understanding of everything that has gone down in DGG. One of the very few people who has mental health issues and actually took a step back to get herself together. She has participated in most of the community outings and has helped out even help lead the charge for DGG in WI. Last but not least the best weapon in the orbiter shield when things get crazy she doesnt mind stepping in and lashing out in crazy moment for the memes ( connor, lav, mr.girl, president runsday, destiny etc..). So, let's just show her a bit of love. https://preview.redd.it/e8czj8r0pcra1.jpg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=994cd206664cfa4efac8b94477d23acf9e94f974 submitted by hutchlarry2010 to Destiny [link] [comments] |

2023.04.02 00:41 tomentis I spent 24 hours in Logan. Here are my thoughts...
Hello!
So last week I had 24 hours to know what Logan is about. Reason is that I might move there in the near future and, aside from meeting my prospective employer, I wanted to also know if Logan is the right fit for me to live in. Therefore, I made a post asking the good people of Logan what were some good places to visit to convince myself that Logan is a good place to live.
I promised I'd make an update once I finished my visit. But to my surprise, the post got a lot of activity (at least relative to other recent posts I've seen here), so I decided to make a separate post and you can find that other post
here. My hope is that others may find that unspoiled post in the future that solely focuses on what to see/visit, and then find this other post with my unbiased opinions
Initial thoughts on Logan:
Aesthetically, I think Logan is nice. I'm a fan of "not-modern" architecture, so I loved the old buildings, houses, and temples/tabernacles/churches. And I have to say, there's a lot of the latter. There was still quite an amount of snow, so everything looked white, but the mountain that's to the east is beautiful and there are a lot of trees which I also love.
Most of the people I interacted with were nice! But I can't say the same for those driving. It may have been me driving extra carefully since I'm not used to driving in snow, but I was still going at the speed limit (sometimes maybe 5 mph less), and everyone was overtaking me. It felt like everyone was in such a rush. Which reminds me...
Rant: I was walking downtown and was waiting to cross the road. When the light changed in my favor, I started to walk, but some gentleman in his car decided to make the right turn as I was starting to cross. We even made eye contact, so he knew I was crossing, but he still decided to press the gas. I don't know if the laws in Utah are different, but I'm pretty sure I had the right-of-way. But whatever, I've been/lived in far worse and just wanted to rant a little.
Places/Restaurants I visited: So there's not much to do in Logan, at least not during Winter as many have mentioned already. Mostly, people suggested eateries, so I hope y'all have a good amount of cultural events during the summer or have families to keep yourself busy/entertained throughout the year because for the folks like me (single, mid-20s) it seems rough. Anyhow, I got lots of suggestions. I wasn't able to go to all of them in 24 hours, but here are the ones I went to:
Angie's: This restaurant seemed like a must to visit. Lots of people mentioned it, and a couple were hating on it, so I had to try it myself. I'd say it's good! I liked the atmosphere, the food was good and the service was great! The only complaint I have is that I had to pay at the register, say what I had to eat, and say out loud how much I wanted to tip. I think those that hate Angie's are only doing so because it's popular. For those curious, I had a Black and Bleu burger with tots and a Hot Fudge Caramel Shake (which was delicious but I had to take out becasue it was a lot of shake) .
Caffe Ibis: This place is amazing! It's a little cafe with delicious coffee and delicious, fresh pastries (not sponsored). Warm and inviting atmosphere, and nice people! I had a traditional Cappuccino and a Fruit Danish. God, I would go every Saturday just to have that cappuccino and blueberry and cream cheese fruit danish.
Crumb Bros: It's alright, don't have muich to say. Someone suggested getting the Cuban sandwich, so I did and it was good, nothing special I'm afraid (but hey, if you love it don't let me bring it down). I also had another cappuccino to compare with the one I had in Caffe Ibis, and man... it was awful. The servers were really nice tho!
Aggie Creamery: Only one person mentioned this one, and I'm not religious but God bless that soul. I think it's the best ice cream I've ever had. The ice cream was creamy, thick and not overly sweet. And the cone... I just have to say, pick the waffle cone (there's a variation dipped in chocolate), you will regret it if you don't go with the cone. I was unsure of what ice cream to pick, so I asked which ones were the most popular, don't ask me for names though, one was chocolate with like chunks of chocolate, and the other one was blue, mint flavored with oreo-like crumbs. Both delicious (and I'm not a fan of mint flavoured ice cream).
Downtown: You can walk it in like five minutes... but it's a cute downtown. I entered Cache Valley Antiques, and I have to say, this antique shop is one of the very few authentic antique shops I've been to). They actually have antiques and interesting things, not like other antique shops that are just thrift stores filled with literal garbage. I also entered Toad and Tricycle Games, I'm not much into board games but they had a good selection and people were playing there, so it's quite active.
Logan Canyon: Someone said that I should visit First and Second Dam and that I don't have to go all the way to Bear Lake. I still tried to go all the way, but at some point, there was a sign saying that snow tires or chains were required. I was in a rental car that I hated and did not trust, so decided to not risk it. I stopped at first damn though, it's nice. I met a kid fishing there, quite a charismatic fellow. I don't know how, but he claimed I scared him as I was making my way to the end of the pier. After I left, I realized I did not ask his name, but still wanted to shout him out here. So if you're reading this, kid, just wanted to say that I'm sorry I startled you and maybe we can fish together someday, if I ever move to Logan.
Utah State University: Some of the buildings made me feel like I was in Harry Potter. Some parts are pretty, other parts were 'meh', nothing special for me I guess. Although, it may have been because I was more preoccupied with making sure I didn't fall while walking on ice.
Final Thoughts: I could live there; I can see myself living there. Albeit, for the right price. As I see it, they would have to pay me, not only to do my job but also to live there. Because it feels extremely isolated. I live alone, but while I was in Logan, I actually felt alone. You look to the east and there's this huge mountain, which is nice, right? But then you look to the west and there's this huge field of nothingness that stretches all the way up to some far away little mountains and then the horizon. And there's simply not much to do there. Apparently, there's a lot of outdoorsy stuff to do, but what about the indoorsy? You know, aside from restaurants.
Loganians (or whatever the town's people are called) claim that it's affordable to live there, but honestly, I'm not seeing that way. Current gas prices are slightly higher than Tucson's, which I can forgive because it may have something to do with location or something. But rent prices are about the same and, in most cases I've seen, more expensive than Tucson's. Maybe when they say "affordable housing" they are referring to mortgages, or maybe when compared to California, but anything is more affordable than Cali.
This is way longer than I had planned on being. I don't know if anyone's going to read all of it, but a couple of people have already asked me for my thoughts on my other post, so here they are. Thank you to everyone that made suggestions on the other post and to those who read all of these.
TL;DR: Logan is nice. Could live there for the right price. Great places to eat. Not much to do.

2023.04.02 00:36 DevilsChurn "Bad decisions" versus "wrong decisions" - have you ever done everything "right", but it still turned out wrong?
After a user posted a few weeks ago asking about making career changes, I was reminded of a post I wrote about 18 months ago that addressed some of the pitfalls around making life decisions - so I'm resurrecting it here to see if anyone else resonates with this question.
This is the context from which the question was drawn:
Before Christopher Columbus approached the Spanish monarchy to fund his expedition West in 1492, his petition to the Portuguese was rejected. However, had Portugal agreed to his proposal, Columbus might not have found the New World.
If the Portuguese had sponsored the expedition, then Columbus would in all likelihood have initiated his voyage from the Westernmost possession of Portugal, the Azores. On a map, that would have made the greatest sense, as these islands were further West than any others claimed by European powers.
However, because he was sailing under the aegis of the Spanish, he began his trip from the Canary Islands: East of the Azores, but - more importantly - significantly further South. This put Columbus into the then-unknown "horse latitudes": the zone where prevailing winds transitioned from West to East. The Azores, on the other hand, are nearly 10º further North in latitude, where the ships would have battled the Westerly trade winds during the better part of the voyage.
As a result of starting in this relative "dead zone", Columbus was able to sail further than his provisions would have allowed otherwise, and as a result reached the Bahamas - something that would likely have been impossible had he not departed from the Canaries instead of the Azores.
Sheer luck, no? Yet, according to the knowledge of the day, it would have been impossible to know that what appeared to be the most advantageous starting point would have doomed the enterprise to failure.
How many times in your life have you made a decision, mapped out a plan, made a choice (or had one made for you) that looked rational and "right", but - through no fault of your own - didn't "work"? Whether it just never took off, or blew up spectacularly in your face; have you ever had even your worst critic admit that you did everything right, but you ran into sheer bad luck?
Perhaps you trained to work in an economic sector that, by the time you were ready to enter it, took an unexpected downturn, leaving fewer jobs than expected. Maybe you accepted a higher paid position at a new company, only to have it go out of business not long after - for reasons you couldn't have foreseen or had knowledge of. Or you started a new enterprise (moving to a new area, choosing where to go to school, buying a house, going into business for yourself), only to have unexpected illness or a natural disaster blow your plans apart.
Alternatively, before you knew that you were autistic, did you ever take on something that, on the face of things, should have worked; but ultimately failed because of seemingly inexplicable bad reactions from those you needed to interface with - be they employers, coworkers, clients or members of the public?
Did you find that, no matter what you did, or how hard you tried, thanks to communication issues (due to autism you were unaware of) you just "rubbed people the wrong way" - and they either disengaged from or even outright opposed you as a result?
These aren't "bad" decisions, they were just the "wrong" ones. Such projects didn't fail because you weren't good enough or didn't work hard enough, they just didn't "work" - and sometimes no amount of research (short of having a crystal ball) would have indicated the pitfalls of your most consequential choices in advance.
Yet, when we experience failure, we are often judged by others - who may know nothing of the particulars - as having made "bad" decisions. According to their thinking: no one who isn't a criminal, a drug addict or a sexual incontinent would have ended up in your position - not, at any rate, from where you started - so you must be deficient in character in some way. As though in our "winner take all" society there aren't perfectly blameless "losers" whose best efforts fall short - or who just have bad luck.
Those who are more charitable will suggest that there are lessons to be learned from failure, and that we can use the wisdom gained to avoid it in the future. Well, yes: in most cases. But when it is merely a matter of something realistically unforeseen that derails us, I'm not sure that it's possible to plan for these contingencies.
As I've said on several occasions when describing the failure of my first foray into self-employment: "Who puts a major earthquake into their business plan, anyway?"
So: anyone here have their own "Spain versus Portugal" moments - or, for that matter, their own "Sliding Doors" moments? A time when - as you realise in retrospect - the choice you made was doomed to failure?
Have you ever started out doing everything "right", just for circumstances to make it all go wrong?

2023.04.02 00:34 AlfredoThayerMahan On The Bounce Part 2
Part 1.
I scanned the various readouts in my HMD, consulting the optronics and passive sensing equipment that the suits carried. A nearby AWACs was currently datalinking a picture of the Ocean around us, showing nothing above the water in a twenty mile radius.
That was good as being zapped on the way down was not only bad for one’s health but it was really embarrassing. You never wanted to be the guy or gal who bought it before they even touched water.
I toggled my primary drag chute at 4000 feet AGL. I felt the crushing deceleration as it slowed my fall. At that time the Kansen deployed their chutes. They’d come in a bit slower than us both because of their lack of boosters and because they were a good deal tougher.
Again, it was better for the Sirens to be shooting at them than it was for them to be shooting at us.
At 2000 feet I cut the drag shoot and turned on my boosters. Where the force from the chute felt crushing, I felt like a Rook Battleship was trying to squeeze me into my boots. If you didn’t slow down for impact that would actually be the case. I had a buddy in basic go out that way. DI’s had us sing “Blood on the Risers” every morning at formation after that as a sort of sick reminder to always use our boosters.
I hit the water like a rock but instead of punching down into it, the water dented like a trampoline and a wave radiated out from me. A trick of using rigging derived technology in these suits meant that what should, in hydrodynamic terms, be a three ton brick, could pirouette on the water like a Ballerina. As a matter of course they actually had us perform dances on the water, just so that we could get used to the sheer absurdity of it.
Then they put us in a wave pool and cranked the swells up to maximum. Let me tell you, if you’ve never seen two soldiers perform a Viennese Waltz in lock-step, wearing about twenty million dollars worth of equipment, all the while in Sea State 5, you’re missing out on life.
“One down.” I reported.
“Two down.” Two said.
“Three down.” Three said.
We spread out, forming a rough perimeter while our Kansen landed, then headed out in the direction of the nearest wreckage.
We made bounding leaps in the suits, peaking above the visual horizon to get a quick look at the area before falling back down into the cover of the Earth’s curvature. AEW didn’t see anything other than the listing hulk of a Rook but one couldn’t be too sure.
Two must’ve lingered too long on one of his jumps because the first warning I had that something was up was the MAW system screaming at me that there was a missile headed our way.
There was no missile. However, Two’s half-melted suit gave off enough IR to trip the system when combined with his downward trajectory.
He hit the water and sank like a stone.
“Fuck, Two bought it.” I swore then called up the datalink. The AWACs traced the thermal bloom back to the Rook.
I wasn’t feeling particularly charitable at that moment. I already lost a guy and the day had just started.
“Three, launch one fuser on my command, Four, Five, fire on that Rook and give that bitch something to shoot at.” I ordered quickly.
“Ma’am.” They all chorused and the two cruisers began firing.
Their shells arched high before lasers zapped them. I didn’t expect the shells to get through but they didn’t need to.
I slaved Three’s fire-control to my own and we each launched a single Linear fusion weapon.
They sped away, hugging the ocean at something like Mach 4. About thirty seconds later the AWACs registered two thermal spikes consistent with their detonation.
We advanced, not making any more jumps. Hopefully if the Kansen we shot at was still alive, she was currently bleeding out her eyes from acute radiation poisoning.
We crossed the visual horizon, missiles and railguns at the ready, trained on the now more smashed up remnants of the Siren Battleship.
“Four, Five, ready Sabots, prep for direct fire.” I ordered.
“Four.” “Five.” They each responded, a simple acknowledgement of the order.
To our right my Optronics caught a shock of movement as a shape rose from the water. A big bitch, an Oceana.
Four was on it faster than me. She readied her guns and let out a full salvo at the Siren.
Not all of them hit but they didn’t all need to.
When a ten kilo tungsten slug flies out at around Mach 5, it carries about the same energy as around three kilograms of TNT. When it hits a target that has impossibly hard skin, such is the case with a Kansen, instead of punching a neat hole in said target, all that kinetic energy is transferred to the internal organs. Multiply that by four or five Sabot rounds and the combined effect is what we generally term as a “pop”.
This Oceana was no exception and an expanding wave of neon yellow blood flew out from the target.
“Nice shooting four.” I said briskly.
“Y-yeah.” She said, looking unsure of herself.
Three moved over and scooped up the Wisdom Cube that was helpfully floating in the water and deposited the item into his dump pouch.
“You wanna check out the Rook?” He asked, voice a little shaky. Two’s death had evidently rattled him. Hell, it rattled me a little.
I considered the choice. Discretion was the better part of valor, and they could always use a traditional salvage team on the wreck.
“Nah. Five, pop a couple torps in it and let's head back. I’d rather not test our luck.” I said.
Five moved up and readied her torpedoes. She’d received them in an effort to give just about every Kansen some sort of ASW capability despite the ship she was based on never mounting torpedoes.
These were MK-35s. Ancient by our standards, cutting edge for Kansen to use. They had a useful role in both targeting surface ships and subs.
She rotated out her tubes and sent three fish on the way, running on gyroscope before the active sonars would ping on the Rook.
I turned just in time to see her top-half disappear.
“Lou!” Four cried.
I turned back towards the wreck, my thermals providing an immediate firing solution on the target.
I snapped off five rounds in quick succession while Three got six. We paused, letting our barrels cool.
“Four, get Five’s cube. Three, on me.” I ordered.
Four was sobbing and muttering “Lou. I’m sorry.” over and over again.
“Four, did you fucking hear me?” I asked, looking at the girl.
She was still frozen in place. At least she had Five’s cube, turning the bloody thing over in her hands. Shit they must’ve been sisters. Why the fuck did command think it was ever a good idea to assign ships of the same class together? All they did was freeze up when one bought it.
“FOUR WE’LL GET HER BACK! FOCUS ON THE GODDAMN MISSION!” I yelled.
She wasn’t responding. I didn’t have time for this.
“Three, follow me. I’m not pulling back if there’s a chance we’ll get zapped.” I ordered.
“Three.” He said.
We were too close to use fusion weapons on the thing and I wasn’t really feeling like trying to force a mentally unstable Kansen to do anything. I also wasn’t in the mood to put her down and just take her cube for later revival. That was generally frowned upon and I wanted to make Lieutenant by the end of the year. In such a case we had to go in and do this the old fashion way.
Five’s torps hit about then. I boosted up as the pillars of water began to fall and hit the deck near where I’d seen the bitch.
Three hit the deck next to me. We scanned the area and moved forward. The ship’s list began to reverse a little as it flooded.
I quickly found where we’d shot. Several neat holes punched in the face shield of a gun mount with massive, tearing exit wounds. A line of neon blood ran out and into the ship through an open hatch.
I looked in, thermals finding nothing, except the line of blood. It was a tight squeeze but I’d been in worse.
Taking my railgun in one hand, I wrenched the deck plating up, creating a bigger entrance. It was good they made their corridors for Oceanas, otherwise we’d just have to wait.
I went first, dropping down and moving forward. I didn’t bother to use external lights. There was no point in doing so. Three followed behind me as we traced the blood trail into the ship. It ended in what I knew was a small supply closet. No way in, no way out.
We’d trained on actual Siren ships that had been captured or pieced together from wreckage so we knew this place like the backs of our hands.
The tricky girl had used her laser to weld up the door. Maybe she was desperate, maybe she was hoping we’d try to bust it down and she’d get us in that event.
I wasn’t too keen on playing her game.
I designated a series of aim points for both Three and myself and opened up.
There was a very important distinction between concealment and cover and with railguns there wasn’t a whole lot that was actually cover.
After twenty shots my suit warned me about the barrel warping and I ejected the spent one and slotted in a fresh set of rails and continued firing.
We stopped and I ordered, “Gas GB.” and prepped a few Sarin grenades.
In the tight confines of a ship a low persistence nerve agent was a Godsend. Sirens didn’t usually wear much in the way of MOPP so if everyone was buttoned up it wasn’t too much of a risk while being very good at dealing with Kansen. When more resources were around the preferred method for dealing with a large ship was to pump it full of a mixture of mustard gas and a nerve agent. The mustard gas created boils and lesions on the skin of targets while the nerve agents killed them, getting into their system with the help of the mustard. It was a nasty little trick that Saddam, rot his guts, had come up with way back when.
Three did the same and we both sent a couple canisters into the room through some of the larger holes in the bulkhead. We waited a few minutes, not as long as I would’ve liked but between the rads, shrapnel, and the gas, I doubted any Kansen was doing too hot.
“Ready to breach.” I said and hovered my hand over the edge of the door.
Her welds, while being rushed, were actually pretty good in quality so I opted to target the hinge side of the door that she had neglected.
I punched in and pulled, ripping the door out of the wall and falling to the side of the bulkhead in the same movement, not exposing an inch of my suit.
Three chased the motion with a few grenades lobbed into the room which detonated in short order before he moved in himself.
I followed behind him and swore as I saw the neatly cut hole in the far bulkhead, an even thicker pool of neon blood leading through the far corridor.
Time to throw caution to the wind. I charged up and smashed through the bulkhead, coming out on the far side, rolling into a crouch, weapon aimed down the hallway in the direction of the stain.
I saw her, twitching there on the ground, mouth foaming.
“Sarin got the target.” I reported as Three followed me.
She’d been clever but just a bit too slow.
I moved up and put a slug through her head. I didn’t take pleasure in killing her or the other Sirens nor did I particularly enjoy seeing her suffer. It was just business. They killed us. We killed them. Sucked to be Two and Five, sucked to be her.
There were always a few recruits who joined up for revenge or whatnot, some even joined for high-minded ideals. Either they tempered or they dropped out. Command didn’t want people who would get emotional over this sort of thing. They wanted people who could just suck it up and get things done.
I pulled out a dissection kit and cut her open before reaching in and getting the cube.
The two of us left that sinking ship and after a quick spray to get rid of the Sarin, rejoined Four who, while no-longer in shock, looked positively miserable even with the helmet obscuring much of her face.
“You done?” I asked.
She nodded dully.
“Alright. This mission’s a bust, let's head home.” I said and toggled the pickup beacon.
Overall it hadn’t been the worst day. But it certainly hadn’t been the best.
