The Presidency of Winfield Scott
Winfield Scott was a distinguished American general who served in three wars and was the Whig Party’s presidential nominee in 1852. He defeated Democrat Franklin Pierce in a close election, becoming the 14th president of the United States. He was known as Old Fuss and Feathers for his insistence on proper military etiquette, and as the Grand Old Man of the Army for his long and illustrious career.
Scott inherited a nation divided over the issue of slavery, which threatened to erupt into civil war. He also faced challenges from abroad, such as the Crimean War in Europe and the expansion of British and French influence in Asia and Africa. Scott’s presidency was marked by his efforts to preserve the Union, promote American interests overseas, and reform the military and civil service.
Some of the major events and achievements of Scott’s presidency were:

• The Compromise of 1853: Scott supported the compromise brokered by Senator Henry Clay, which admitted California as a free state, abolished the slave trade in Washington, D.C., enacted a more stringent Fugitive Slave Act, and organized the territories of New Mexico and Utah without restrictions on slavery. The compromise temporarily eased sectional tensions, but also provoked resistance from abolitionists and pro-slavery extremists.
• The Gadsden Purchase: Scott approved the purchase of a strip of land south of the Gila River from Mexico for $10 million in 1854. The land was intended to facilitate the construction of a southern transcontinental railroad, which Scott hoped would foster economic development and national unity. The purchase also increased American influence in Central America, where Scott supported the construction of a canal across Nicaragua.
• The Ostend Manifesto: Scott disavowed the secret diplomatic document drafted by American ministers in Europe in 1854, which proposed that the United States should acquire Cuba from Spain by force if necessary. The document was leaked to the press and caused an international outcry, especially from Britain and France, who opposed American expansionism in the Caribbean. Scott declared that he had no intention of annexing Cuba or interfering with its sovereignty.
• The Kansas-Nebraska Act: Scott opposed the controversial act passed by Congress in 1854, which repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and allowed the settlers of Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether to allow slavery in their territories. The act sparked a violent conflict between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in Kansas, known as Bleeding Kansas. Scott sent federal troops to restore order and protect free-soilers from attacks by border ruffians from Missouri.
• The Crimean War: Scott maintained a policy of neutrality during the war between Russia and an alliance of Britain, France, Turkey, and Sardinia over the control of the Black Sea region from 1853 to 1856. He resisted pressure from some Whigs and Democrats to intervene on behalf of Russia or Turkey, arguing that American interests were not at stake and that involvement would risk war with Britain and France. He also offered humanitarian aid to both sides and mediated a peace settlement at the Congress of Paris in 1856.
• The Perry Expedition: Scott supported the naval expedition led by Commodore Matthew C. Perry to Japan in 1853 and 1854, which opened Japan to trade and diplomacy with the United States after more than two centuries of isolation. Scott saw Japan as a potential ally and market for American goods in Asia, and hoped to counterbalance British and French influence in the region. He also encouraged Perry to establish friendly relations with China, Korea, and other Asian countries.
• The Civil Service Reform: Scott initiated a series of reforms to improve the efficiency and integrity of the federal government. He appointed qualified and honest men to public offices, regardless of their party affiliation or political views. He also introduced competitive examinations, merit-based promotions, and regular inspections for civil servants. He reduced corruption, patronage, and nepotism in the administration, earning him respect from both Whigs and Democrats.
• The Military Reform: Scott reorganized and modernized the U.S. Army, which had grown outdated and inefficient after the Mexican-American War. He increased its size, improved its training and equipment, established new branches such as engineers and cavalry, created a professional staff system, and revised its regulations and tactics. He also promoted scientific research and innovation in military affairs, such as steamships, telegraphs, balloons, rifles, and artillery. He made the army a model of discipline and excellence for other nations.
• The Tariff of 1853: Scott supported a moderate increase in tariff rates to protect American industries and raise revenue for the federal government. He also favored a flexible tariff system that would allow the president to adjust rates according to changing economic conditions. The tariff was opposed by some southern Democrats who feared it would hurt their agricultural exports, but it passed with the support of northern Whigs and Democrats who benefited from the protection of their manufacturing interests.
• The Homestead Act of 1854: Scott signed into law the Homestead Act, which granted 160 acres of public land to any citizen or intended citizen who settled on it for five years and improved it. The act was designed to encourage westward migration and settlement, as well as to provide opportunities for land ownership and economic independence for farmers, workers, and immigrants. The act was opposed by some southern Democrats who feared it would create more free states and reduce their political power, but it was supported by northern Whigs and Democrats who saw it as a way to promote democracy and social mobility.
• The Transcontinental Railroad Act of 1856: Scott approved the construction of a transcontinental railroad that would connect the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, facilitating trade, travel, and communication across the continent. He also endorsed the use of federal land grants and subsidies to private companies that would build and operate the railroad. SECTION 1: DEFINITIONS
In this act, the following terms are defined as —
(1) Agency — an Economic Growth Agency established under this bill.
(2) Minister — the Scottish Minister responsible for the administration of this bill.
(3) Region — the following regions of Scotland —

(a) Central Scotland, (b) Dumfries and Galloway, (c) Fife, (d) Grampian, (e) Lothians and Scottish Borders, (f) Highland, (g) Orkney and Shetland Islands, (h) Strathclyde, (i) and Tayside.

SECTION 2: ESTABLISHING THE ECONOMIC GROWTH AGENCIES
(1) By this Act, an Economic Growth Agency is to be established under the relevant Ministry, with regional operations in each of the eight regions of Scotland.
(2) Each established agency shall be a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal.
SECTION 3: FUNCTIONS OF ECONOMIC GROWTH AGENCIES
Each Agency shall have the following functions:
(1) to promote economic development within its respective region by attracting new businesses, encouraging investment, and creating employment opportunities;
(2) to support existing businesses in the respective region through providing them with advice and assistance to help grow and develop business operations;
(3) to identify and promote key sectors within the respective region for economic growth;
(4) to promote innovation and technology within its respective region to support economic growth;
(5) to collaborate with other agencies and organisations necessary promote regional economic growth;
(6) and the providing of advice to the Scottish Government on the economic development matters within the respective region.
SECTION 4: GOVERNANCE
(1) A board of directors is to govern each established economic growth agency, consisting of no less than seven and no more than fifteen members.
(2) The chairperson and the other members of the board of directors of each agency are to be appointed by the relevant Minister.
(3) Board of directors members are to be appointed for a term of up to four years and may be reappointed for a further term of no more than four years.
SECTION 5: REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
(1) Annual reports are required to be produced by each agency and presented to the relevant Minister outlining its activities and achievements during the previous financial year.
(2) A copy of each report is to be produced by the relevant Minister that is to be presented before the Scottish Parliament.
SECTION 6: FUNDING
(1) Atleast £60 million under the relevant ministry is to be profiled by the Scottish government to each agency, in order to enable it to carry out its functions across 5 year periods - pending renewal.
(2) The managing of its own budget shall be done by each agency in accordance with the guidelines to be set by the Scottish Government.
SECTION 7: COMMENCEMENT
(1) The provisions of this Act shall come into force the day this Act is passed.
SECTION 8: SHORT TITLE
(1) This Act may be cited as the Economic Growth Agencies (Scotland) Act.

Now some members may wonder why we should have such a bill, but the purpose is simple, by establishing these economic growth agencies we allow the economic development to be targeted and in support of local communities. With clear functions and duties outlined in section 3, the economic growth agencies will play an auxiliary role especially with analysis for improvement. The economic monitoring and reporting from such a scheme would be crucial in aiding governments and business. We believe this is a necessary part in ensuring our national and local development strategies are well informed and able to support the goals of all actors.

I don't care about camera quality, or any bells and whistles. I just need calls, text, discord, google maps, and a camera. My priorities are durability, waterproof, long battery life, and able to be both quickly charged or trickle charged. Small and lightweight is also preferable. I would prefer to have it able to work with Straight Talk, since I've had good results with their service in remote places. I'm also open to suggestions for other service providers, but I need good coverage in remote locations anywhere in the U.S. I would prefer it to be $150 or less, but I can be a bit flexible on that if I know it will last years. Any suggestions? What have you found to be a reliable backpacking phone?

I'm currently an incoming medical student. Did my undergrad in Ateneo as a full financial aid and dormitory fees scholar. Lahat talaga ibinigay ng Ateneo (at sobrang nagpapasalamat ako doon, hindi ako makakagraduate kung hindi dahil sa kabaitan nila). Was also sustained by my DOST scholarship throughout my undergrad. Talagang pinagpursigihan ko ang nakaraang apat na taon, sunog kilay sa pag-aaral makakuha lang ng matataas na grades, para maka-secure ng scholarship ulit sa med school, alam ko kasi na we would never be able to afford med without one. Awa ng Diyos, I will be graduating with magna cum laude honors this July. Recently rin, lumabas yung results ng ASMPH scholarship. Grabe yung iniyak ko dito kasi ang tagal kong ipinagdasal--may mga journal entries pa ako noong undergrad in the form of a prayer, asking God ano yung plans niya for me kasi nakakalungkot yung uncertainty na hindi ka sure kung magiging doctor ka dahil walang pera.
However, even with a 100% financial aid scholarship (est. 50K yung babayaran sa buong med stay), kulang talaga kami sa budget pagdating sa living expenses. Sobrang mahal kasi ng cost of living sa Ortigas. Sinasabi ng mom ko na igagapang niya daw, basta maging doctor ako kasi alam niya na dream ko talaga yun (at sobrang pangarap ko mag-aral sa ASMPH). Kaso natatakot ako na hindi kayanin yung gastos. Kahit 6k every month na renta (na mababa na kung tutuusin), malabo for us. Every June-May of the year nakakatanggap kami ng demand letter (minsan pag sobrang lala, cancellation letter) dahil hindi kami makabayad ng tama sa bahay. Kahit di ako yung nagbabayad noon, syempre sobrang nakakastress kasi I see how it affects my parents. Nagi-guilty ako na dadagdag pa ako because of med (noong undergrad kasi walang bayad ang dorm ko). Magcocollege na rin yung isa kong kapatid, although, state university naman siya. Pero kulang talaga and ramdam ko yun.
Lately i've been contemplating kung dapat ba mag-apply ako sa school na malapit sa amin (HSI). Feeling ko naman kakayanin makakuha ulit ng scholarship. Kaso, conflicted ako kasi sobrang pangarap ko talaga yung ASMPH. As in...alam mo yung napanood ko yung Blue Lights ceremony nila tapos naiiyak na agad ako imagining that's me?! Haha. Sobrang love ko din yung culture ng Ateneo bilang dito ako nag-undergrad, sobrang bait ng mga tao, lalo na sa mga scholars. Hinding-hindi ko pinagsisihan na nilet-go ko yung slot ko noon sa UP. Best decision of my life, ika nga. Kaya pinanghihinayangan ko kung sakaling isuko ko yung slot ko dahil lang sa living expenses, pero at the same time, kulang talaga eh. Ang hirap naman kung sakali mag-aral na nagi-guilty kasi ikaw komportable, yung pamilya hindi kasi sayo na lahat napunta ng resources. Sinubukan ko na din maghanap ng scholarship pero di ako qualified. Yung Doktor Para Sa Bayan, it's mostly for those living in GIDA areas naman, so kahit may willingness to serve, hindi pa rin makukuha kasi di ako galing sa municipality na yun. Gets ko naman yun. Bukod doon, wala na ako mahanap na dormitory scholarship.
Isa pa, nanghihinayang ako i-give up kasi gustong-gustong-gusto ko talaga (umulit na ata). Pero noong lumabas yung scholarship results, super saya ko kasi finally, mangyayari na siya. Sobrang excited na ako mag-aral and give back. Gusto ko mag-aral ng super, super buti to show sa scholarship committee na 'di sila nagkamali, na walang sayang kahit singko (yun din ang motivation ko noong undergrad). In true atenean fashion (wow!), tinry ko na din magdiscern. Pero sabi sa DLQ class namin, kung ano daw mas dine-daydream mo, ibigsabihin God calls you to that (syempre medyo diluted na yung concept haha pero maganda yung lesson, ito yung gist).
Would it be such a big mistake? Malaki ba yung difference ng opportunities available to you after you graduate?

I guess I’ll start by mentioning that I am OKAY and no mental or physical harm came my way as a result of this. I would overall classify this trip as a good trip, mainly because I had one of my lifelong and trusted friends with me to help me through it.
At first it started with my friend hitting me up at like 11:00 pm saying “yo u tryna trip tonight I don’t got work tomorrow” (this is on a Saturday and I had no plans either). I told him I’d be over soon with about 4g… or what I thought was 2g but really was just a big ol’ handful. Keep in mind this is PE. So we ate the 4-6g I probably had and then my friend gets the genius idea to go get MORE. This is because my friend is a real big guy and has tolerance issues with a lot of substances.
Now, i’m NOT a big guy, I’m a 5’8 135 pound guy, a real little British dude. But still, I didn’t disagree because I do love myself some mushrooms. The trip actually went extremely well for about the first two hours. Me and boy was just watching revenge of the sith and chillin, on our existential mushroom conversation about life and thoughts. Shortly after, I felt a wave of weakness and started getting bad trip thoughts. I got up and something along the lines of “dude I gotta lay down dude wtf”. My friend asked probably the worst question he could have: “You having a bad trip dawg?”

This parts a little fuzzy because I did actually lose consciousness, but I moved toward his guest room because he was kind of leading me there talking about something with a bed. Then I looked and saw about 5 cardboard boxes with a bunch of junk in them and I remember the whole surface of the bed started moving around like it was water which REALLY tripped me up, so I started stumbling into his living room and then I realized I lost control and was about to pass out. I directed myself towards an empty part of the room and fell on his living room carpet.
My friends reaction to this was excellent, I’m amazed by the fact he was so coordinated that he actually picked me up, placed me on the bed, and turned off the bright light that was overstimulating me (which he could tell because I was covering my eyes).
Literal moments after this- we’re talking about 6 seconds- I felt amazing. Best part of the trip by far. I was warm and happy and my friend sat down and I kind of went over what happened with him since I was unconscious. He told me what I just described to you and at first I was embarrassed but then I said to him “ay, it’s a good story isn’t it?”

Yes, it's another boring, purely hypothetical, long-winded post Leed's next manager. And I know that we've had about 1,000 of these posts over the last few days alone, but I really think that Ange is one of those managers that a lot of you seem to be overlooking, for a variety of different reasons.
So as someone that has followed his career, and supports a club that he's actually managed at, let me just tell you all why I think he would be the absolute perfect manager to take us forward, especially long-term.
And first of all, yeah, I'm aware that the odds of us being able to draw him to the Championship are low, he will probably end up taking a Premier League job, in fact, he's heavily rumored with Tottenham as we speak, but I would take Celtic's Ange Postecoglou in an absolute heartbeat. In fact, he was the bloke that I heavily advocated to take over from Marsch, and I still think it was a mistake not appointing him back then.
A bit of a history rundown for those wondering who "Big Ange" as we call him over here in Australia is.

• Won absolutely everything there is to win here in Australia in terms of our national competition, the A-League. Single-handedly turned the Brisbane Roar from lower-table obscurity into arguably one of the best footballing dynasties this country has ever seen.
• Left Brisbane to take over Melbourne Victory and rebuild the club after years of mismanagement and perennial underperforming. He would stay at the club only a short time before being given the national team gig, but during his time at the club, he pretty much rebuilt it from the ground up, and is credited with putting together the squad that would later go on to become the first-ever domestic treble winners in A-League history.
• During his time as Australia's manager, we won the Asian Cup for the first time in our country's history. Given how competitive the Asian confederation is, and how good teams like Japan, South Korea etc have become, please understand that this was a monumental achievement for a country like ours that doesn't even consider football to be a first-rate sport. Ange still reflex on it today as one of the greatest achievements of his career so far, and probably rightly so.
• Ange during this time was very outspoken about how seriously the sport was taken in Australia, the support he was given by our governing body, how critical our media could be etc, and following a successful 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign, stepped down as manager of the national team to pursue club football in Japan.
• During his time at Yokohama in Japan, in just his second season in charge, he won the J-League, the first time Yokohama had won it in about 40 or 50 years, something ridiculous like that.
• And obviously is now at Celtic, where once again, he has won pretty much everything realistically available to him, except for obviously the Champions League.

People might poo hoo Ange because he's Australian, because he's never managed at what some people perceive to be the "elite level", what they really mean is, he's never managed in England.
There are a lot of reasons I've seen people give as to why they think appointing someone like Ange would be a mistake.
But let me say this.
Every single club he has ever managed at, he has always won silverware with.
He has never once, ever in his career departed a club on bad terms, in fact to my knowledge, he's actually never been fired, he's always left on mutual terms to pursue other opportunities.
And lastly, as somebody that supports a club that he's managed at, Melbourne Victory, he is probably just about as close to the Australian version of Marcelo Bielsa as you will ever get. He is almost universally loved by everyone in this country for the success he brought during his time as national team manager, and he's generally thought of almost universally in this country as one of the greatest managers we have ever produced.
Ange, in my opinion, would probably be one of the best appointments the club could make, especially for a long-term project.
