His short sleeved checkered shirt and blue-jeans were just like Cowboy Candys' on the TV. He went into the kitchen for a drink. "Hi, Mom. May I have a glass of milk?" He asked. "You certainly may . Why are you so happy?" asked his mother. "I saw my dream horse during my nap and he told me he's gonna take me for a ride when I go to sleep tonight." Billy couldn't stop smiling about his new friend. "Your dream horse? When did you first see this? Besides, I thought you felt too big for naps." Mrs. Brown was surprised by the sudden change. "My new friend at school, Jose, told me all about naps. He's living here with his family for a year. They're from Spain. In his country eveybody takes naps in the afternoon. I think they call it a siesta." Billy was so proud that he could speak in a new language. Try as he might, Billy couldn't wait for night. He kept asking what time it was. "If I put on my sunglasses will it be time to go to sleep?" he asked. "No." laughed his mother. "The night won't come any faster. Tell me more about your dream horse. What color is he?" "He's a palmo-mino!" answered Billy proudly. "You mean a pal-o-min-o, don't you?" she corrected him, lovingly. Palomino (pal-oh-MEE-no) is a coat color in horses, a gold coat with a white mane and tail. "Yes. He's a palomino. That's his name! I'll call him Pal." Billy played outside with his sister Sue, but he kept one eye on the sun. When his father came home Billy was happy to see him. Dad's arrival also meant that it wouldn't be long before supper, and then time for bed. "Hi, Dad!" he shouted. "It will be time for bed soon." Billy's Dad hoisted his son into the air for a hug. "Why so eager to go to bed, Billy?" his Dad asked, puzzled. "You didn't get in trouble did you?" Mr. Brown was a tall man who wore a business suit to work everyday. He put Billy down and picked up Sue. "Hello, Suzy sugar, how are you?" "I'm okay, Daddy, but Billy wants to meet his dreamhorse in his sleep. " She brushed her blonde curls out of her face as she talked. "Can I have a dreamhorse, too?" "You sure can, honey." He said. "OK! Pal and I will bring you a feather, and one for Sue and Daddy, too." He kissed his Mom goodnight and pulled the covers up under his chin. Billy rolled over onto his side. The insistent nudging continued until finally he first opened one eye, then another. A big brown eye was looking back at him. "Pal!" shouted Billy, excitedly, suddenly wide awake. "You did come. I was afraid you wouldn't make it." He quickly sat up and kicked the covers off. "Hop on Billy," said Pal, "We're going for a ride. We have a lot to see and do tonight!" Billy gave a quick bounce on the mattress and flung himself onto Pal's back. Threading his fingers through Pal's shimmering white mane, he held on as tight as he could. Pal wheeled and then gracefully leaped through Billy's open window. Off the two of them flew, into the night. Billy watched the scenery change from the lush green mountains of his home state, to become flat farm country. Below, the checkerboard fields, now rich with crops, quickly gave way to rocky mountains and a drier climate. "Where are we?" Billy asked. "We are about to visit a time when the land was as free as the people who lived here," replied Pal. "Some of my friends will join us for our journey." Just as Pal finished speaking a band of Indians rode towards them. "Hello Pal, my good friend," said the leader of these horsemen. "And who is this?" he asked Pal. "This is Billy," replied Pal. "He is a friend who wants to go with us on our ride." "Then he is welcome," came the Indian's reply. No one found it strange that the Palomino horse spoke, because in dreams everything is possible. "Who is this?" Billy whispered to the golden Palomino horse. Pal pawed at the ground as he made the introduction. "This is Thunder-Who-Walks, said Pal. " He is the Spirit Chief of all the Indian nations. Each one of the braves who ride with him here represents a tribe which roamed this land for many years before the coming of the white man." "Many of those tribes are no more, Billy. The Chief has agreed to let you ride with them tonight so that they can show you their land, and tell you of their people." With that, they were off. They rode through valleys, splashed across streams and silently filed past long empty villages carved into the sides of red mountains. They traveled on and on, past cold campfires and barren canyons, past prairies where bleached bones of buffalo glowed softly in the moonlight. Finally they came to a small rise. There, the Chief raised his hand, signaling the band to pause. He gestured towards the wide expanse of land which stretched for miles before them. "This land is great like the people who once crossed it, Billy. A sea of buffalo once roamed those vast prairies. Now they are gone forever, and so are many of my people." "Gone forever?" asked Billy, casting a worried glance at Pal. Pal nodded. "The Indians were driven from their land, Billy. Some were even driven from this life." The Chief looked so very sad as Pal said this, that a tear began to trickle down Billy's own cheek. A brave from the back of the group came riding forward. He leaned over and laid a comforting hand on Billy's shoulder. "Do not cry, little one. Change is part of all our being. My people lived here for many moons, even before Chief Thunder-Who-Walks' people came. Change happens to all the tribes of the earth. It happened to our tribes, and it shall happen to yours. We agreed to let you ride with us tonight so we could share with you a special knowledge. Look at this land young Billy, and think of what has happened to our people. Teach the people of your time to first respect one other, and then to respect the land." Billy nodded his understanding. With one last look at the wide prairies below them, they turned and began their journey back. They cantered through the valleys, and into the deep green forests. They forded shallow streams, and swam deep rivers. At last, on a dusty plain, they came upon a set of railroad tracks. There they stopped. None of Billy's companions would cross the tracks. Chief Thunder slipped down from the back of his sturdy Paint and walked over to where Billy sat astride the golden Palomino. Pointing at the railroad track the Chief said, "This is the path of the Iron Horse, Billy. It brought much change to our land and to our people. We will not cross this path, so here is where we will part ways. Remember the lessons you learned with us tonight. Use the knowledge wisely." Impulsively, Billy slid down off of Pal and stood next to the Chief. He raised his arms. The surprised Chief knealt down on one knee so that Billy could give him a hug. "Goodbye, young Billy," he said. Then, reaching up into to his feathered headdress, Chief Thunder-Who-Walks removed three eagle feathers and handed them to Billy. "How did you know I wanted to bring back the feathers?" asked Billy in surprise. The Chief just smiled and shook his head. "Never forget, Billy," he said softly. "Never forget." The morning sun began to filter softly through Billy's open window. He reached up and rubbed his eyes. For a moment he wasn't sure where he was. Then all of a sudden he sat up. He was home again. "Mom, Dad, Sue ... I'm home!" he shouted. Within minutes everyone was in his room asking if he had seen his dream horse. "Where did you go and what did you do?" asked Sue. Billy told them everything that had happened. He told them about the ride across the country, and about Pal, the beautiful golden palomino horse, and about the Indian tribes who were no more, and about his friend the wise Chief. "And the Chief gave me three feathers so that I would never ever forget. That's a feather for each of you. But where did I put them?" Billy had been rooting through the bed covers but he couldn't find the feathers. "There were three of them, one for each of you," he said, beginning to worry that he had lost them on the journey home. "It was a dream, son," said Billy's Dad. "That's right, sweetheart," said Billy's Mom. "It was a dream, honey." "What's this?," inquired Sue curiously, grabbing hold of a shimmering strand of coarse white hair that was sticking out from beneath Billy's pillow. She gave it a quick tug but it seemed to be attached to something. She tugged again and something else came into view. "There's a feather under your pillow, Billy!," she shouted. Billy pulled out the first feather, then a second, and a third, all tangled together in a few long white strands of hair. "That's from Pal's mane!" said Billy excitedly." And these are the feathers the Chief gave me!" Mr. and Mrs. Brown looked into each others eyes and then back at the feathers and the strand of horse hair clutched tightly in Billy' hand. Billy's Dad scratched his head and his Mom raised her eyebrows in surprise. Billy's face was beaming with joy. He glanced down at his treasures. "Thanks Pal," he whispered to his dream horse. As his parents and sister were still pondering over the feathers and strands of Pal's mane, Billy glanced towards the open window. In the distance he could see a lone eagle as it soared gracefully through the bright blue morning sky. "And thank you, Chief Thunder-Who-Walks," he said softly. "I'll never forget." "I promise." |

The boar is not dead, though to all the other hunters’ senses it is. It lays motionless on its side within the sled, tied down by rope with two arrows sticking discordantly out of its hide like seams of broken bone. Frozen blood pools in the cracked stomach of the sled, collecting rather than leaking now that red ice has sealed the wood. Poison leaching out of the arrowheads keeps the boar docile, and its breathing so light that only Trapper can see. An ovate in too-thin robes shivers as she ties a garland of rosemary around the beast’s neck, murmuring prayers to the ancestors that they might find the kill worthy.
Winter has seized the land in its vise, its unending waves of cold and snow having transformed the Barony of Marlas into a crueler scape, one Trapper doesn’t quite recognize. Tranquility abounds along the driven snow, all through the clearing, hiding the buried world and the woes of man but unable to snuff them out. Trapper knows well what a mirage it is, the oppressive winters of his homeland no less savage than the bloodletting summers. The numbing cold does not soothe his aches, for he knows they’ll be worse come morning, come the thaw. Too soon this clearing will melt, its river gone from white to red, the whole Septima Line thrust back to war.
Baron Orys refuses to yield to midnight season, to accept its peace, and so from his great warhorse’s saddle he brazenly belts out a mixture of drunken lyrics and commands, determined to master this hunt even if he does not partake. An entourage on horseback spreads out in his orbit, ranging from eager young footmen to grizzled junkers, all in varying states of inebriation at his command. Their braying is nearly louder than the hounds’, who hungrily stalk between the sled and the hole they pulled the boar out from. Teased by the hunt but yet unrewarded, they’re too unruly to be kept in check by the kennel master.
On foot slog the unfortunates who actually have to take part in the hunt, Trapper among them. They huddle into their hemp canvas cloaks, glancing up at the moody afternoon sky threatening to crack open with another snowstorm. Dark clouds sweep in low from the south like a riptide, a single vast current swept in from the mountains already menacing the Oldwoods. Its furthest gales reach them as tongues of vengeful cold, flecks of whipped-up snow biting into Trapper’s exposed skin.
By the boar’s nest leans a typical Mallean, one of Trapper’s two erstwhile comrades. Sigorn is tall, pale, broad, with the close-set, wide-boned features of a commoner, and a shock of red hair grown out to protect against the elements. Beneath his cloak he proudly bears his blood-flecked armor, each dent a Darkman put into it a point of dear pride. He’s not the only one, either, the clearing filled with dozens of youths whose first blooding ended in victory amid a blizzard. Baron Orys, deep into his cups after six days of nonstop celebration, saw a break in the storms and gladly called a hunt. When informed he could not go on account of his shattered knee - he simply grinned, and ordered himself tied to his saddle.
Trapper remembers the moment his lord fell from the saddle, burned into his nerves. The screaming of horses, skidding hooves catching on the frozen ground. On the edges of his vision a rider smashes into a branch in the din, others don’t move at all for fear of the blizzard. His spurs dig, his borrowed steed whines, and he races for his lord - only for another to reach him first.
“What a woman.” Sigorn sighs beside Trapper, craning his neck to look at one of their lord’s companions of honor. Susannah Oye, junker unlike the others, a pretty, willowy noblewoman well into motherhood, with the lean, ruthless look of a ranger. Her two poisoned arrows are what struck the boar down, and her pride curls off her body like steam. Sigorn’s face cracks into exaggerated appreciation, and then he turns to their lord’s other honored companion. Another woman, this one as young as they are, haughtily-built and leering with none of Susannah’s refinement. Many of those looks are reserved for Trapper, forced to slog on foot as just another hunter. “Anya too. I think she fancies you, eh?”

Startech sent me a replacement but I still have the same issue. They said that it might not be compatible with my laptop as mine would might require 90W or 100W usb hub.

My initial post was removed for what I assumed was mentioning a channel name; so here is the initial post plus update of our trip that I hope doesn’t break any rules!
So we're two idiots who decided to undertake a 1000km cycling journey across Japan from Kagoshima to Osaka. This is our fourth time in Japan so wanted a challenge to see more of what the country could offer. After flying into Fukuoka for one day (amazing city; I highly recommend Ohori Park); we got the slow bus down to Kagoshima to find bicycles. Since we are pretty poor, we got the cheapest mamachari bicycles we could find and children's helmets for the fun designs. My mate left his shoes at home in Bangkok so he’s wearing flip flops until he can find some size uk 12s which so far have had no luck.
Anyway, we started cycling in the beautiful city of Kagoshima, and our first day was spent tackling the volcanic island of Sakurajima. Wow, it’s beautiful here - challenging day indeed, with all the inclines, especially given the heat and being very white - funtimes. I burned through three coats of factor 50.
The mamachari bicycles might not be the most sophisticated or expensive bikes, but they are reliable companions so far - even with squeaky breaks and seats that don’t go quite high enough. The first day we managed 70km which took a few hours more than it should have, but there’s only so much we can do with no gears!
Anyway we're determined/stupid enough to prove that you don't need fancy gear to embark on an epic adventure - also documenting it all with 3 cameras (sad I know).
This journey isn't about luxury or state-of-the-art equipment or being clever - we’re just two overweight guys embracing the spirit of adventure, trying to lose a bit of weight, pushing our boundaries, and immersing ourselves in the incredible landscapes of Japan, and the people we have met so far have been so amazing!
Part two: Kagoshima to Miyazaki
We had to find a last minute Airbnb as the first day around Sakurajima took much longer than anticipated and we feared the impending darkness on our Mamachari cycles. The only feasible one was hosted by a lovely older couple in Kirishima so we cycled around the whole bay to get there before sunset. The bay of Kagoshima is absolutely stunning and you get all sides of the volcano and you cycle from the relative safety of a bicycle lane on the coastal highway. This is a must see for any visitor to Kyushu! We knew the next day was going to be a long one, so we aimed to get up at 6am and go the whole day to our next destination, Aoshima in southern Miyazaki.
The cycle started tough on lack of sleep and right away we had to start climbing mountains. We knew we would be pushing the cycles up a lot of hills, but the first couple hours involved nothing more than a snail's pace to the top. Now, while it isn’t the heat of summer yet; the sun is very strong in May and you will need to keep applying sunscreen through all the sweating. Near the first peak we met an actual real cyclist also going the same way, but assured him it will take us much longer, and to ‘see you there’.
What goes up must come down, and the downhill rewards were shockingly fast and full of empty roads with scenic railways and old Japanese houses (plus vending machines). The journey took us through the mostly flat town vistas of Miyakonojo with many blessed combini stores along the way to replenish the thousands of calories and litres of fluid lost. We went through country back roads and rice fields and the most amazing Japanese landscapes that I dreamed about seeing on this adventure.
But looming in the distance was the next, bigger mountain range and the toughest thing I had ever done! Up and up, half pushing my bike and half breaking my knees to scale the hills for the next few hours. Regretting our decisions to buy these bikes but ultimately being rewarded with the most intense downhill segments and nature. Issues arose when the lane for our bicycles would disappear into corners with massive trucks passing next to us and my mate almost came off his bike and had to hold onto the wall. With more sweat than I have ever produced and getting delirious; we eventually came into the Miyazaki city areas and could pretty much coast this entire route to our next place beside the sea of Aoshima and a whole home to recover for a bit.
We arrived about 10 hours after we set off, 94.32km travelled over the two mountain ranges to another beautiful seaside town with a totally different vibe to Kagoshima. It seems very much a tropical holiday getaway for Japanese and a surfers paradise ! Kyushu has shown us so many environments over the two days and the 165km of cycling, and will prove to show much more in the days to come.

I've been eyeing on this utility ebike ever since it was first announced a while ago, and I immediately jumped on it when a LBS in Seattle got a few in stock. Even the LBS people were giggly about this ebike and throughly browsing the manuals and extra stuff (a short lifestyle mag, stickers, etc.) in the box while I was signing paperwork. They think it'll be a smash hit.
A bit about me: This is my 3rd ebike (RadRunner 1 - Aventon Aventure Gen.1), mostly riding for 20-25 mile semi-daily fun rides + grocery runs. I'm 6 feet tall and weighs about 240lbs.

A bit about me: This is my 3rd ebike (RadRunner 1 - Aventon Aventure Gen.1), mostly riding for 20-25 mile semi-daily fun rides + grocery runs. I'm 6 feet tall and weighs about 240lbs.
This is my first impressions after putting about 100 miles on it:
GOOD
- Coming from sub-$1800 ebikes, I immediately noticed the higher quality of components. Everything feels so much smoother. Zero rattling (except the center-mounted kickstand when going over big bumps).
- I love the styling of this ebike so much. I have the Gloss White Mountain color, and it's the perfect mix of a retro and modern look.
- The hub motor is supposedly rated at 700W, but it doesn't feel underpowered at all compared to my previous ebikes with a 750W motor & a similar weight.
- This is the first ebike that I'm happy riding with lower assist levels (even 2/5), probably because of the torque sensor.
- 4-piston hydraulic brakes w/200mm rotor = lots of braking power. I have no problem going from 25mph to full stop in a few sec. If anything I need to be careful or else the wheels will lock up.
- The 20x3.5 Careless Whisper is very quiet, surprisingly so especially compared to the 26x4 knobby tires I was riding with previously.
- The headlight is B R I G H T especially at its max luminance mode. I don't think I'll need an additional light for this ebike.
- The estimated range on the display feels pretty accurate, even after riding in the hilly parts of Seattle. No sudden jump on the numbers.
- I think it's got a bit better ground clearance than my previous ebikes since I haven't experienced a pedal strike yet.
- No suspension fork and a super rigid frame mean that you do feel every single bump. The stock gel saddle is decent, but you might wanna add a suspension post.
- Ghost pedaling starts around 18mph.
- The throttle sends the power to the motor even when the brakes are engaged. It should get cut off.
- The throttle is very responsive, but it's almost too responsive compared to how gradually it gives you power with just pedaling.
- Sure, you can use the app or the estimated range mode, but 3 bars/segments for the battery charge indicator is kinda sad, especially given the price.
- The taillight only has on or off state and doesn't double as a brake light.
- It's nice that the headlight has SEVEN different modes, but there's no indication on the display of which mode it's in.
- Even though there's a dedicated light switch to select the headlight modes, it doesn't double as the on/off switch for the lights. For that, you have to long press UP on the display.
- All the buttons on the display are pretty mushy and have a very small area where they recognize the press.
- The rubber lock cover on the battery is a nightmare to open.
- None of the mounting points are suitable for my folding lock (Foldylock Forever). I wish there were mounting points on the down tube.
- Pannier adapters should come pre-installed and not an $100 extra.
- I wish there was a way to limit/control the top speed. Aventon's display/controller essentially has a speed limit for each assist level, and that was actually helpful to easily match the speed with riders around me. On Globe Haul, you can get to 20mph easily even when you're on the lowest assist level.
- The humming of the motor has a slightly higher pitch than my previous two ebikes with a Bafang motor. I think fewer dogs have freaked out so far haha.
- It came with an extra derailleur hanger in the box, and both the LBS and I had no idea why.
- The way the manual is written strongly suggests that there'll be an LT version.
- Since Rad Power Bikes is based in Seattle, I got more than a few people going, "Is that a new Rad? Looks good!"

A couple of hours ago, I was in the midst of a coding frenzy when my stomach started rumbling constantly. I decided that my coding project can wait a few minutes and that I needed to go grab some food. I live in the western United States, so the nearest place is always a McDonald's.
I just wanted some quick food. I wasn't dressed, I hadn't showered all day (days off whoo), so I wanted to run to the nearest drive-thru and get back. McDonald's it was, then.
I picked myself up from the computer, threw a leash on my dog, and headed out. I loaded the dog in my car and turned the ignition. Outside, there was still a bit of light. The sun had just dipped behind mountains in the horizon and it was just dark enough to warrant headlights.
As I'm winding my way out of my neighborhood, I started to notice that the streetlamps kept going out as I passed under them and then coming back on when I'm passed them, which I thought was strange, but I chalked it up to coincidence as I've had streetlights go out on me before.
I eventually made it to one of the last turns to get out of the neighborhood, but as I pulled up to the stop sign, I felt a wave of... something... pour over me. I heard my dog whimper. I looked back at her and she had ducked back into the middle of the back seat, tail between her legs, with her fur sticking straight out.
It felt like I went through a thick sheet of static electricity, honestly, and I began hearing a loud feedback noise inside my head, and the world got blurry.
This went on for a few seconds before it cleared up.
My car had stalled during this time, so I turned the engine back on and made my way past the stop sign. When I pulled out into the main road, I immediately noticed that the streets were vastly different.
They were the usual black, but they had a bright white iridescent color to them as well, lighting up the environment. The streetlights that were usually on the medians on the road were gone as well, replaced by trees.
McDonald's was still right by my house. I could see the sign. It was in a different building, though. The building was much bigger than usual, but so far this is the least strange thing to happen on this drive.
So I drove towards it, still very much confused as to the sudden change. My dog in the back of my car seemed to acclimate to this change much better, as she was back to sticking her head out of the window and sniffing the air.
I pulled up to the only stoplight between me and my destination and the car in front of me was something I had never seen before. The logo on the back was a silver circle with what looked like a silver Sicilian eagle in the middle. On the eagle's chest was the letter "G" in a cursive font. The model of the car was "Vapor." The license plate was the same as any other, though.
So I go through the light, still wondering what the hell happened when I reach the McDonalds. I get to the drive-thru menu, which is all LCD screens updating to show featured menu items and looping gifs of people smiling while they eat.
My usual is still on the menu, though for $2 more than I'm used to paying for it, so I order that. I pull up to the window with my credit card out and at the ready so I can pay.
The worker opens the window and greets me. I greet him and hand him my card.He looks at it and then back at me and says, "We don't accept that here," and then hands me a gadget that reminded me of my dad's blood pressure monitor.
I guess I was supposed to put my finger in it, but I was so thrown off I just asked, "Uh, can I just pay with cash?"
"Cash? Sure, I guess."
So I hand him $20 and he inspects it for longer than anyone should, and then proceeds to give me my receipt without my change.
When I ask him about the change, he looked at me, confused, and said, "We don't have cash at this location, sir. We only can give cash vouchers."
Oh..kay.
So I look at my receipt and, lo and behold, the bottom of it says, "Cash value: $11.26." Good enough for me, I guess. I pull up to the next window.
After waiting for a few minutes, the next worker opens up his window with my bag of food in his hand and a big smile on his face.
He hands me the bag and I put the receipt in it out of habit.He then says to me, "Oh wait, I forgot your fries! Can I have the bag back, please?"
So I hand him the bag and a few seconds later he returns and says, "I hope you have a great day! I made this spe-sp-spespe-spe-mm-I-great day!-spe-spe..."
This went on for a few seconds. His face and body motions were moving and resetting like when you tilt an n64 game slightly out of the console.
I didn't have time to be terrified during the moment, because as this happened, I felt the wave of electricity come over me again. Just like last time I heard my dog whimper, and when I looked back she was crouched in the back, her fur extended.
And just like last time, I heard a loud feedback noise in my head. My eyes took a second to adjust, but when the world came into focus, I saw that I was in a parking lot. I recognized everything.This was the parking lot in which the McDonald's I'm used to is located. And sure enough, the McDonald's was visible in my rear-view mirror at its usual location.
So I go through and buy food, again. My $20 was missing, as was my cash voucher or whatever.I have no clue what happened, honestly, and I wanted to get as much of the detail out as I could while it was fresh in my thoughts.

I could be wildly misremembering some details, because I've watched the first 20 seasons of Air Crash Investigation recently and none of the episodes show what I remember. I believe this episode aired in the mid 2000's but it could be a bit later, it wouldnt be any later than 2012 though. I don't remember the time period or location of the actual accident the episode was about.
From what I remember a plane is flying through a mountainous area, possibly at night, and the captain tries to set the autopilot to either the airport hes landing at, or a waypoint he has to fly over. The plane had a screen which showed nearby waypoints and airports sorted by how close they were to the plane, and the captain selected the one at the top thinking it was the correct location, but it was actually a different waypoint to the side of them, i think to the left?. The pilots either dont notice at all, or notice too late and the plane ends up crashing into the mountain. I don't remember if there were any survivors.
I remember a specific shot towards the end of the episode where it showed a perspective inside the cockpit of the captain looking towards the right with the mountain getting closer and closer in the background.
