2023.05.31 09:25 EmdersGame3789 I’m beginner welder, need some tips for job opportunity

Hey guys, relatively new welder. Gone through a few community college courses on welding for about 2 yrs. Learned 1-4g both mig and stick. 14-24 gauge steel. Almost done practicing 5g pipe schedule 40 with mig and stick. Knowledge in ER7018/ER6010, ER70s-6. Still learning weldments and symbols. I’ve tried production work but not only is it extremely slow and I’m not getting anywhere. I believe I have just enough skill to try getting a cert in AWS. Mainly 1-3g positions of any thicknesses and any joint and 4g/5g if I put more practice in. The real question is will the certs put me in the door or production welding for 1-2yrs. Which holds more value. How do I ask for some field work, how do I ask for someone to give me a chance.

Welder problems
Sorry I’m advanced for the crackhead quality haha. I’m having problems with my welder and can’t for the life of me figure out what’s wrong with it. Problem is the dial reads wrong and anything under 100 amps won’t hold an arc. 145amps feels like 120 amps , and 165 amps feels like it’s 130 amps. It’ll hold and arc and run good, but I connected my Hobart inverter and 130 on it feels like it runs way hotter on the inverter for some reason. The machine will do 1/16 all the way up to 5/32 rods without bogging or struggling hard at all what could the problem be.

2023.05.30 23:52 bluenoiseMF Looking for a new machine or machines

I have a Miller Millermatic 140 welder I got several years ago and it has been serving me very well. I run it MIG with C25 gas in my shop. Several months ago, I picked up a cheap Hazard Fraught Titanium Easy-Flux 125 as I wanted a dedicated flux-core for outdoor work and this one got good reviews. Well, the HF blew its little biscuit over the weekend, so now I need another flux core welder.
My thinking is to run my Miller with flux core wire and get a new machine or two for the shop for MIG, etc. I'd really like to get TIG and stick, too. I also want to be able to TIG weld aluminum. The only single machine that can handle this is the Miller Multimatic 220, as far as I can tell. But, that machine runs about $4200! If that's the best option, I'm willing to go that route, but I'm thinking there may be some better options.
It looks like some of the AC/DC TIG machines can run TIG or stick, so that would satisfy that part, but I'd still need a MIG machine. What do you guys recommend to get me set up to weld steel, stainless, and aluminum? The thickest material I'm likely to weld is 3/8" and I have 240v/50A available.
Thanks in advance.

2023.05.30 23:50 dsb122105 220V 30amp inverter to run tools in work van.

Hey everyone, not sure if this is the best place to post. I am currently building out my van and would like the option to do welding on the go. I already have a Hobart Handler 140, which is 220V only. I know there are better welders out there for this application but its what I have so want to try and make it work.
I am planning on building a high capacity battery from prismatic LIFeP04 cells or 18650's. Does anyone know if there are any high current inverters that output to 220V? 30amp is the maximum the welder does. I don't have to run it at max amperage, so even 220V/20Amp works.
I know a Pure Sine inverter is recommended mainly for inductive loads, I couldn't tell you the physics behind it though. Could a welder run of a modified sine wave inverter without issue?
Finally, where are you guys sourcing cells from?

Training New(ish) guy , kinda stumped
So away from consistency and going too fast here and there, SM ( subject matter ) is doing pretty good for only having touched a Mig welder for alittle less than a working month. I supervised while he was doing this one and his pace and speed were good on the bottom one ( he kinda fluffed up the top one but it’ll hold so I’m not mad ) but my question would be why does every single one of SM’s welds Banana like that? Since day 1 all of his welds banana’d like that and I chalked it up to speed and consistency, but after spectating/ supervising these , I did not see him slow down or speed up in any areas but low and behold BANANA. I’m honestly stumped as I’ve never seen this before consistently without speed being the 100% big factor. The right side on the bottom is elevated because he tacked without gas , realized his mistake , then proceeded to put a 1/4-1/2” tack , so I understand why it’d banana alittle bit on that side but it comes right back up on the left so idk , any thoughts?

2023.05.30 23:10 Itisntme2422 How to fill a hole?

I have a piece of 6mm by 50mm (0.236in by 2in) spring steel with an 11mm (0.433in) hole in the middle, how do I get rid of that hole? I have no space for forging however I do have access to a mig welder and a oxy acetylene torch, as well as a lathe and mill. What is the best way to fill it so it can be used for a blade?

2023.05.30 14:08 New_Connection9333 An ex-military dude that wants to become a welder has questions for you all

Hello everyone, excuse me if i make mistakes english isn't my first language.
Basically, i'm looking to become a welder, im 24 years old and after 6 years in the french military police i decided to leave to pursue my new goal of becoming a welder. I only have the basic diplomas from my country, nothing more nothing less, and i have no experience at all in that domain. What i like about it and why i want to become a welder, is that i need a job that needs precision, meticulousness and which you can be proud of your work at the end of the day.

I want to have a clear project in my head, which is why i thought about it and really want to use my years in the army to give me more chances towards the companies i want to work within. In my case, i've always been a fan of military stuff (especially tanks <3), so in France it would be Nexter, Thales Defence, MBDA... these are my end-goal companies that i want to work in, that way i'll do a job that i like, in a company that products things i like, so no way i can't be happy that way. I know that before joining these companies, i'll have to do a few years in smaller ones and get experience.

However, here in France, it's kinda hard getting responses to your questions as it seems like welders are a bit apart of internet and it's complicated contacting one, so thats why im trying here hoping you guys can help me.

My first question is regarding to what i want to work on later (military stuff like vehicules missiles etc...) what would be the best technique(s) to learn ? In France we have professionnal formations (thats what i want to do and it costs money) but since welding is so vast, i really want to focus myself on my goal and so i'd like to know directly which technique(s) will be the more usefull later on.

My second and last question is a bit more vague. Although i'd like to work on what you read above, i'd also like to know if you guys could re-do your careers in welding what would you have done, where would you have worked, on what would you have worked. I'm asking that because as i said, even though i'd like to work on military stuff, lets not lie to ourselves, i'd also like to have a fair pay at the end of the month. I've always been a competitor and always did my best to become THE best in whatever i put time into, so i don't want to limit myself in being a "simple" welder (no offence i just don't know if it's something actually "simple" i take it as an exemple) in a military company if i could possibly be a welder in something way more complex and earn way more as long as i have the experience and the abilities. Ive heard particular things about welders in oil platforms, that they earn unbelievable amounts, see what i mean these kind of things, i'd like to know if that's true, and how a determined dude who starts welding could possibly be working in something like that in a couple years. (i just hope that welding military stuff isn't one of these domains where you earn a sh*t ton otherwise this whole paragraph is useless since it's what i'd like to do lol)

Alright thats it, thanks for the time you spent reading all that and thanks in advance for your responses, if you didn't understand something i'll try to say it an other way, i just don't know if things here in France are the same as in other countries (especially the techniques MIG MAG TIG etc... idk if it's the same every where in the world ?)
Thanks !

2023.05.30 03:30 wherearemyvoices Switched from weldpak140 to titanium unlimited 200

I do paint and body work and recently traded some work for a big compressor and he decided to throw in the titanium welder, I wasn’t going to turn it down since I do tig weld and currently only had the weldpak. Ultimately I have my dad the weldpak and chose to keep the titanium, will it be sufficient for small tig jobs and personal work? I’m already better off on the mig since it has 220 vs the 110 I was running but I want to make sure before I buy leads if it’s going to make it worth it. Does anyone have an upgraded tig torch that works on the titanium?

Got some leftover oak so that would make a nice combination with the black paint i am planning to use for the frame.
What an awesome craft to master and very useful to expand your repaifab-skills.

Has anyone tried using a heat dissipation cooler designed for cooling welding torches to connect to their shotgun style condensers? I am thinking about making the purchase but don’t want to drop $300 on something that may or may not actually work for this purpose. Thoughts?

Hi everyone!
I am nee to welding and recently bought a Nutool RSN165 mig multi welder.
My issue is I cannot for the life of me find a knurled roller for flux core welding (and the machine only comes with smooth rollers).
Could I use the smooth rollers for flux core welding at all?
Alternatively, if anyone knows where I could find the specific roller (in Europe) that would be a massive help!
