Cian_Ci is not only corrupt, but also "pretends to be poor and upright". Their parents have also been deceived, picking up trash in the city for over 10 years to "subsidize their household expenses". Some property owners who were deeply affected by this even saved his number in their phones as "Li Chaowei".
Cian_Ci also induced their parents to move to an old residence under the pretext of a shortage of housing conditions, and talked about the family's financial difficulties in front of their parents. Seeing their son's economic troubles, their parents, who were over 70 years old, believed it to be true and supported themselves by picking up trash for over a decade. Meanwhile, Cian_Ci had already used embezzled money to buy 3 luxury homes and shops in other areas.
Cian_Ci appeared to be righteous and frugal, but was actually two-faced. They wore a pair of leather shoes that had been resoled three times and repaired before wearing. They didn't smoke, gamble, drink much, or eat out often. They liked to carry a basket to buy vegetables and personally cook dishes. However, Cian_Ci's "frugal" lifestyle included wearing an old cotton vest they had bought when they first started working, which they didn't dare to throw away after 30 years, and eating simple meals with no meat for all three meals a day.

With apologies in advance to readership this is bound to be from an egocentric point of view, but I’ll try to add some colour from how the rest of the tournament was going too ;)
My first international trip since the pandemic eased (thankfully last year was in London!), and I was greeted for the first time by being stuck in the non-EU passport queue. I took the opportunity to loudly ask my UK counterparts in the queue who’d voted for this, as I surely didn’t. Thankfully I had a travelling buddy in the form of Fruitstrike, who was taking in the tournament for the first time!
We travelled on Friday and whilst a bunch of people met up for a pre-tournament drink, I took the opportunity to indulge another gaming vice and hit up Dragon’s Lair for Friday Night Magic (for those who care, I came 2nd in my pod, which is good as we redrafted rares so I got some nice cards!). I then got a full night’s sleep knowing the mental bludgeoning that awaited us over the next two days. Having gone 5-3 and 4-4 at previous conventions I was hoping for a similar outcome this year, but am coming off the back of a late 2022 disaster of going 2-8 / 5-15 in RTSL/ITSL, so can’t say I was brimming with overconfidence :P
Saturday rolled around and I found myself in paradise, having Swedish meatballs for breakfast. And pickles with my bread roll! Seriously, Scandinavia knows how to do breakfast. Also, painfully aware how cramped for time getting 4 games of TS in is, I ate looooooads and sought to fuel myself with caffeine and sugar the rest of the day. Getting from in-town to our games venue was a breeze, with Stockholm’s well-connected public transport system and app – Anton (stenskott), our host and organiser, set us up in a board games café/bar called Alphaspel. This was one of the best venues to date, with loads of room, lots of games tables, and a well-stocked bar connected.
We made some introductions and hellos, both to returning faces (people like Anton, OF COURSE Tasos, Karl Johan, Shez and Sean, David, Ziemowit etc. who have regularly attended these conventions), new faces to tournaments like Linh Le and Christian Månsson, but also some great and good names in the TS community like Fredrik Adlercreutz, Henrik Pettersson, Ryan Pindulic and Luis Rubio – BasqueMex, one of our knights in shining armour who keep the community organised, which is no mean feat! We then got our pairings and sat down to get to work.
Anton had prepared a lovely trophy for the winner and a couple of novelty prizes, including a mug for anyone who was dealt all 5x 4-op cards in Early War (“Mr Big Spender”), and anyone who evented Summit for ‘meaningful stakes’ (“Event Summit, You Coward”). There was discussion pre-tournament on our WhatsApp group thread that the chances of the first mug being claimed was pretty slim even with 8 games in the brackets. Our host needn’t have worried though, as Davorac completed that task within about 20 minutes of the first coup roll!
I was paired against Jarek Grzaslewicz in game one, and I also got all 5x 4-op cards (the last appearing in the turn 3 deal), so was pipped to the mug by Davorac, alas! However, the important thing was the win, and with an ops surfeit in the early war I (as USA) easily weathered Jarek’s USSR attacks and eventually ground it out to a final scoring win, going 1-0.
My second game I was paired against Ziemowit. How did that happen? Z lost game 1 :O I also have to add we’ve never played across the table before. I was USSR and thankfully was able to score Asia in T2 and T3 for -7vp each time, which gave me a solid buffer. Also heartening was to hear every time I played an acceptable move I got the “makes sense” response, which warmed my cockles each time, as positive feedback from a far better player is music to my ears! However, let’s not forget this is a game against Z, and the game is never over till it’s over, which means it was a relief when I was re-dealt Asia scoring in Turn 8 (playing it to an “oh, come on!”), and following it up with Wargames to close the game out. Ziemowit is 0-2 starting the tournament and I’m 2-0, now that’s an upset.
For match 3 I move to the ‘feature table’ (Anton had set up a stream, you can catch at https://www.twitch.tv/stenskott_/v/1830554267?sr=a&t=9228s) to play Tasos. Tasos was my first ever Convention pairing in 2019 and we hadn’t been matched since, so it was nice to play him! I was USSR and benefitted from about 6 war rolls going my way, so the match ended in a win in final scoring for me, and I’m off to my best ever start for sure, 3-0. Nosebleed heights!
Match 4 for the day and it being swiss pairings I’m up against another unbeaten player in Ryan Pindulic. I was USA and Ryan applied excellent pressure throughout the game, so by Turn 10 it was a pretty lost cause (it had been for some turns!), with no defcon gambits or Europe Control possible, so I took my opportunity at -19 in headline at Defcon 3 to event Summit. After some feverish discussion with Anton, where I basically admitted I was only doing it to win the novelty mug, and Anton suggested that the strategic answer was to say this was the only way to prolong the game (and I said ‘yeah, that’s definitely why I’m eventing summit), I event it, lost the roll at a +1 modifier, and Ryan wins on VPs to go 4-0 on the day.
Heck, I’m chuffed at 3-1, but I think the feelgood story of the day is Sean, who had a bit of a ‘mare in 2022 at London, is also 4-0 on the day, kapow! We repair to a nearby pub, have some beers and pizza, and dissect the day, before getting some sleep and doing it all again the next day.
Day 2 we knew from the start we’d be under time pressure – getting to the venue at 9am and having to be finished absolutely positive no later than 7pm is really tough for 4 over-the-board games, and in Swiss where you have to wait for the last game to finish to get pairings. Knowing that I doubled down on my breakfast, tripled my meatball ration and ate a day’s worth of food at 7am. Any excuse for my gluttony.
Back to the venue, and Ryan/Sean are paired in the winner’s enclosure, and I play Henrik Petterson, a fellow 3-1 player. I don’t get the USSR steamroller going and the game eventually drains to a USA wargames victory in T9. On the podium, Ryan beats Sean and keeps his streak going, whilst I’m at 3-2, which is still a fine record for me – I’d be happy on day 2 with a 1-3 record to finish 4-4 overall, but 5-3 would be more pleasing.
Game 6 I am paired with David Persson, who I had the pleasure to play in London last year too. It was an excellent game, and David did brilliantly as the USSR, turning the screw on me, and despite me being able to stick him in the Bear Trap for 3 action rounds (the old 1 in 9 chance), he was able to consolidate his position and close out with Wargames in Turn 10. I’m back to 3-3, alas! But we do get to go outside and talk about poker, both of us being poker players in our time, which was fun to talk about another game for a while. Meanwhile at other tables Ryan wins again, with some players breathing down his neck, including Ziemowit who has won all 4 games since starting 0-2 to come back to 4-2.
Game 7 I am overjoyed to get paired with my troublemaking counterpart in team Fruitlinger – Fruitstrike! Our camaraderie stops at a tournament though and I was a horrible mean opponent, giving him all the hassle I could, and thanks to him being incredibly fatigued and me being a merciless, stony-hearted monster, I did enough to crest with VP in Turn 7 as USSR. Fruitstrike also took that as an opportunity to drop G8 and go for a sleep, so one can really really say I pissed in his chips, can’t we. However, I try not to feel too bad as I really, really wanted a winning record at this tournament and I’m up to 4-3. Meanwhile at the top table, Ryan Pindulic is playing Fredrik Adlercreutz, and their game ends in one of the rarest things, a draw in Final Scoring! So Ryan is 6-0-1, Fredrik is 5-1-1, David P is 5-2 (having lost to only Fredik and Sean), and Ziemowit wins again to go 5-2. Spicy!
The final game, G8, in the games that matter most, Ziemowit plays Fredrik and Ryan plays David Persson; Ryan seals the win to finish the tournament undefeated with a 7-0-1 record, and Ziemowit wins his 6th straight to finish 6-2 for 2nd place. Fredik completes the podium with a 5-2-1 record.
Meanwhile, in midtable obscurity, I still have an 8th game to see if I go 5-3 or 4-4 and I’m paired with Shez, who I’ve played a bunch online and over the table with and is a pleasure to match up with. He is USSR and comes out firing, he’s all over Africa and South America, and I’m only surviving by being able to ditch scoring cards with Ask Not. He pitches CIA nice and early so DEFCON lines are lost to me, and in the end my only gambit is Europe Control, so I first try Tear Down This Wall after attemping (but failing – nicely parried) to take Czechoslovakia and Austria too to enhance the roll, but in the end only manage a small realign at +1. In T10 I have to specifically get dealt Chernobyl, Shez mustn’t get Wargames, and I need sufficient ops to flip East Germany (which was at [3][9] at turn start). All those things happen (Shez opts for Aldrich to pull a 4op card, but said after the game he should have used ABM and pumped another 4 ops in East Germany, which is unfortunate) so I sneak an improbable Wargames win, and get a 5-3 record.
I’m happy with that, and whilst I’m not a ratings hound it was nice to see my awful sub-5k rating bounce back to a healthier 5500ish following the tournament. I got wins, and even better a mug which I will treasure and use every time I’m streaming in future! It’s gonna get some shoutouts, and it’s the only mug I’ve used since returning to the UK as well, haha.
We’re already feverishly discussing the 2024 venue – Lisbon is a frontrunner – and I encourage people to come along. Yes, it’s kind of weird to visit lovely cities and spend 2 days in a room not looking at said cities. But, the games are by and large incredibly friendly, high level events, the gang are excellent company. It’s not just about the games – as well as the bar trips Friday and Saturday night many players headed into town to dinner Sunday night, and also met Monday afternoon for a great game of Kubb (a fantastic outdoor game I recommend checking out!), so really fantastic company all round. Whilst a lot of brainpower was expended playing the 8 games, the time we had was a blast. Mega thanks to Anton for organising the venue, the great trophy for Ryan, the fun novelty mug prizes, an extensive google doc guide on transport options, places to stay, venue and city information and so on. It must have been like herding cats at times, but he did great. Tasos and Luis were as always fantastic on the reporting, pairing and games org side, the convention was slick on that front all thanks to their hard work, so many thanks as ever to them. And of course thanks to all the players – not just those I was paired with, but it was a huge convention (22 players attended!) and a great time.

As we know, in October last year, after the sudden death of the old CEO of InterBus, Alexander Ducasse was appointed to take his place. He immediately established himself as a very enterprising and courageous leader.

In just 2 days, InterBus was incorporated into the new EverMore organization, and a week later, the new Paragon project was launched.

And here interesting questions arise. To begin with, I would like to draw attention to some details of those events:

1. Opinion of some InterBus employees

“A number of longer-serving InterBus executives resigned over the deal, stating that "far from safeguarding InterBus's future, the empires have sacrificed it in order to fill their war coffers."”
InterBus shares were owned by 4 empires of New Eden. Before EverMore bought them out, tension between the empires was rising - the Stellar Transmuter in Turnur had already been launched, Caldari defeated the Federation in the fight for Athounon. The empires urgently needed money, and when EverMore offered it (and much more than expected), the empires did not care about WHAT and to WHOM they were selling.
Some people at InterBus were very concerned about this.

1. EverMore Acquisitions

Immediately after the purchase of InterBus, EverMore bought 7 more companies! Many of them had thing in common - not the best reputation or serious financial problems, or both. And no one could understand why EverMore needed them, and in this lineup. If the acquisition of cloning or implant companies can be explained by the launch of Paragon in the future, the purchase of small media and food companies is still a mystery.

1. EverMore internal activities

The in-game description of the corporation also includes the following: “ Critics of EverMore claim that its practice of directing its child companies to outsource key services to each other is a deliberate device to obfuscate their inner workings”.
The internal logistics and operation of EverMore remains a mystery. It almost does not use external outsourcing, a significant part of the corporation's activities are hidden from prying eyes, and EverMore makes sure that this remains so in the future.

1. Project Paragon

Just a week after the creation of EverMore, she launched a project to exchange elite services for capsuleers in exchange for ITEMS. Here the questions arise - WHAT? WHY? What is the ancient method of bartering, why not exchange for currency, loyalty points or capsuleer services (quests)?
The somewhat strange decision of the implementation of Paragon's services can have many explanations. I'll give you one thing: perhaps bartering with capsuleers is EverMore's way of fighting corporate espionage. If EverMore needs something that it can't get through internal outsourcing, it will have to be bought. Buying large quantities of something in New Eden is difficult to hide, and even if you work through a chain of shell companies, it is possible to find the source of the transaction (especially for regulatory authorities). Receiving items from Capsuleers creates an almost UNLIMITED and UNCONTROLLED purchasing method that no one can track - there are many Capsuleers, they report to no one. It is almost impossible to track the exact number of transactions and their composition.
Also, don't forget that Paragon's director is IRIS, the first AI director. Perhaps Ducasse just loves innovation. The AI as a boss has a number of advantages, including - it is executive, strictly obeys the given program, does not ask unnecessary questions and has large computing power. But if EverMore suddenly needs to hide certain purchases using statistical analysis among millions of regular orders, without attracting unnecessary people and without causing questions from subordinates - AI is the perfect candidate.

Perhaps all this is just a series of coincidences, EverMore is a great company that loves innovation and does not want to reveal its plans to competitors. But if we combine these facts, we get this:
Ducasse (and the group of people he represents) took over as director, took advantage of the political crisis in New Eden, and used InterBus resources to get out of the control of the empires and gain free rein (through buyouts of InterBus shares). He then acquired a number of small companies of low value in a variety of areas, in order to ensure maximum independence from external companies. Some InterBus members quit when they saw what was happening. The work that takes place inside EverMore is unknown to us: what they do, what specialists they attract and in what areas they work - EverMore does everything to keep incognito. They buy ship hulls in large quantities through Paragon - no one is able to find out the exact composition of purchases and their volumes.
EverMore has unparalleled freedom from controls, vast resources and NO ONE knows what they are really up to. And EverMore does everything to hide it.

I was thinking about this while having a discussion with a friend about Madonna. She is one of the greatest stars of all time, with one of the longest mainstream music careers. Though, compared to other stars of her time, she doesn’t doesn’t receive as much recognition at all. For example, if we look at the Spotify and YouTube stats of artists from "old" eras of music like Michael Jackson, Queen, The Beatles, they have much higher numbers and many more enduring hits.
In my country, Madonna is rarely talked about or played on the radio (I’m referring to stations that play older songs too).I still see a lot of younger people listening to Michael Jackson, Queen, ABBA, Nirvana. (I know they come from different eras, but it's just an example of old artists). But I hear very little about Madonna. I asked 53 people my age (17) what they knew about Madonna (10 knew “Hung Up” and 7 knew “Like A Virgin” and that’s it). For example, she doesn't have any tracks with over 500 million streams on Spotify, whereas the artists I mentioned earlier have several, some even surpassing a billion streams even.
Some people say it’s because her hits haven’t transcended generations and that many people (including young people) find her embarrassing now, because of her TikToks, the massive filters she uses, the controversies. She has always had this provocative and controversial image, but it seems that with age and the fact that she is no longer in her prime, it doesn't resonate as well anymore. I think there’s an element of ageism in many of these comments, like “she’s too old to do that,” and on the other hand, I can understand how it might discourage people from listening to her seeing her doing what she did last year on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon".

I'd like to know the impacts the bizzare placement of my setting, Gnosis. It's kinda-sorta a fantasy, but this is a question sci-fi readers would better be able to answer and it's not really fantasy so much as a soft sci-fi on an alien world so post-apocalyptic they've had a couple more apocalypses since then and nobody's got a clue that their "magic" is actually their Precursors' sufficiently advanced technology. The Daystar is in the thick disk, currently it's ~2100 parsecs from the galactic plane, which it passes through twice per galactic orbit though of course that's an incomprehensibly immense span of time. That's an odd place because it's not an ancient metal-poor star like thick disk stars tend to be; it's a young, temperamental G0V main-sequence star 750,000km across with very high metallicity. Most likely, by which I mean "I have zero other explanations", something bigger's gravity displaced it from an orbit within the thin disk however many aeons past. Probably, all things considered, a black hole.
I put it there because it gives them a great view of the galactic core and a decent-ish one of the overall structure of the galaxy. In fact, it's such a great view of the core even its primitive-ish modern inhabitants (they've got cars but haven't split the atom) have not only realized the six stars swirling around the middle are orbiting some unseen colossus, not even that the entire nearly 27,000 parsec wide galaxy is orbiting it too, but two years ago they calculated it's got a mass of ~8.26x10³⁶ kilograms. To be clear since most people aren't going to be able to tell from those numbers all matching up, bonus points if you did, that supermassive black hole is Saggitarius A* and they are in the Milky Way, back when the Daystar was in the thin disk it was probably around or even part of Omega Centauri, the intermediate-mass black hole in the middle of that cluster may even be the very object that flung it up into its current orbit, although it's only one possibility. I think that location's really, really friggin' cool and I think the IU astronomers would agree.
The Daystar itself's not a problem to a planet-dweller, even as often as it flings around coronal mass ejections (and it does that a lot), because the planets around it are also metal-rich with intense magnetic fields and dense atmospheres that ensure the primary consequence of their star's violence is a much stronger difference of potential between atmospheric layers than on Earth. (With that comes vast, easily collected atmospheric energy, but also a LOT of lightning strikes, some so powerful they disable unhardened electronics for blocks around... and potentially induce acute radiation syndrome.) It does also mean geomagnetic storms every decade or so, those are a pain for the people in charge of the power grid but whatever it doesn't threaten life and Precursor tech's super extra hardened to hell and back so it'll survive geomagnetic storms and even their space stuff routinely weathers direct hits from coronal mass ejections (if it couldn't, they'd have built it stronger and/or further away). I've even checked to make sure all three inhabited worlds are in the Daystar's habitable zone at 180, 270 and 360 million kilometers. (Technically that last one's a little too far, but its greenhouse effect and volcanism... Adequately make up for it, mean surface temperature is -3c and there's plenty of water.)
However, it's just the threat posed by the Daystar itself that I can safely dismiss. Are there any cataclysmic consequences to the Daystar's location? I know the central bulge is nowhere near habitable for primarily radiological reasons, amongst others, for example. Would being out in the thick disk be the same sort of problem? Would the thick disk be a bad place in the galaxy to build if your civilization wants all the new life they're adding to three planets and a moon in its interior to survive until it's indistinguishable from natural life? The Precursors had plenty of options, there's no reason they'd pick a system Earth-derived life could not survive in long-term. (The Precursors were not human, but they did accidentally cause the Bronze Age Collapse. For what it's worth, they were really sorry for like 12 seconds before bailing and pretending they were never here.)

TL;DR: ER is dying way quicker then other souls and the only way for it to come back is with exciting and rewarding new things instead of just balance patches and copying stuff from older titles. Even with good balance the TTK, netcode, the matchmaking, lack of meaningfulness are still gonna be huge problems. Talking about balance is fine and all but Imo we should think about it more deeply than balance and netcode.

Everyone talks about balance like how good the game would be if they nerfed X setup when, in reality, this wouldn't affect the game on a significant level. 99% of people would still be unsatisfied with the pvp just as they are now.
I know reddit is full of copelords that can't accept the fact that this game is doing extremely poorly in terms of pvp, especially now. While at launch ER had 1mil players on steam, now it has 25k, a number only a bit bigger then DS3 had at this time after release. Content creators that haven't already dropped this game already are super tired of it and views on YT are at an all time low right now.
You really have to sit down and ask yourself if ALL of the balance problems are fixed will pvp in this game be actually attractive and exciting? If From implements Gabri's mod (that's as close to true balance as you can get) will this make playing this game genuinely fun for a long time? Will it bring back the people that have left? Will it make all the pvp haters that you see everywhere in the souls community give this game's pvp a try?
I think that the answer to all of those questions is no. Like sure if they will help us (the people that play this game rn) a ton if they nerfed ps spears but this will mean nothing to someone that is not actively paying attention and has an understanding of the pvp rn.
When making the game they had a "multiplayer is made to enrich the single player experience and that's it" mindset. What I mean is that pve players when they get bored of pve they can hop on to multiplayer and either help others with progress or stop other people's progress and a short time after that get back to pve. The system works fine for stuff like this and everyone is happy. But when you try to do this seriously or for a long time ( again pvp or coop) the system really shows it's cracks and it becomes the mess that we know pvp is. I think they expect us to not take this pvp stuff so seriously, so they themselves don't take it so seriously.
The combat at it's core is amazing in ER but because of the reason stated above all of the other systems let it down so much.
When making this game they didn't put any thought into the multiplayer(pvp and coop) aspect at all, so you get a multiplayer experience that is in many ways worse than their older titles (10 year old games!).
The biggest thing is that the game doesn't give players the reason and the systems to start doing the pvp. You want the player to be genuinely excited to try the pvp by making him earn something meaningful while doing it. You would either give good in-game rewards (like in DS2), let the player have fun with friends in team matches (like moba or csgo) or give the player that true satisfaction of getting good (winning tournaments in fighting games for example). There isn't any meaning in doing the pvp since rune arcs are useless, for team fights you either need to gank or put up with the most boring arena ever and even if you get gud it doesn't mean anything since nobody watches tourneys and a gank can still easily mop the floor even with the best invaders like G9.
On the other hand, if players somehow want to pvp than the systems that are supposed to assist them are actually getting in the way. The invasion items are shit and work in a complete nonsense way, the spawn points are horrendous and phantom bloody finger is a joke, duels matchmaking makes sure you can't match with anyone even though there are plenty of free people, the rune level/weapon level system divides the player base so much that it makes sure you can't find people, and let's not forget the netcode that a couple independent people with limited time have already managed to fix.
Another thing is that the experience is very stale after a bit of time and that leads people to the other negative sides of the game being felt even harder (people complaining about shunter or knight's gs lol). In duels you spawn into the same boring circular stage and to the exact same stuff each time, and in invasion you are always against the same 2 or 3 man team doing the same stuff. Implementing covenants again and doing creative 3d arenas for dueling is the least they can do to mix the experience again. ClayAmore's arena in seamless is so exciting since it gives you the 3d space, the big player limit, the good netcode and the team fights.
A good connection and a good 3d map gives you the options to deal with broken setups and ganks, while a bad connection in an flap place can make even the scrub with a bad build a nightmare to fight.
