UCSD vs UMich for MSCS
2023.05.31 02:09 Parabalt UCSD vs UMich for MSCS
Any insights into which school is better for pursuing masters in CS with focus in ML/AI? From an academic rankings perspective the two schools look almost equal (UMich #11 in CS on USnews and UCSD #12. I am planning to do a thesis and do academic research with a prof, and in that area both schools are similarly ranked on
csrankings.org, for CS research overall as well as when filtered for ML/AI only (UCSD may have just a slight edge here, if any). Trying to get ML/AI job at a big tech company in research or developer type role, and potentially pursue PhD.
Other concerns I had were name recognition: UMich is well known, but I wasn’t sure if UCSD is as well known for CS. I’m not from the west coast so I’m not familiar with UCSD’s reputation there, but I plan to work there after grad school. If I got to UCSD, will people respect the name of UCSD in tech?
Also, UMich has huge football/basketball programs which I definitely value. From what I’ve gathered, UMich may have a stronger school culture/identity than UCSD given sports/social scene. Weather obv better in SD with no harsh winter, but I haven’t experienced that before so can’t say how that would effect me.
Any advice or insights would be super appreciated, trying to decide between these two schools!

2023.05.31 02:08 hichewaddict Strut issues subaru 2017 Impreza sedan
Strut issues popping up again
I have a 2017 Subaru Impreza sedan that got hit in an accident about two years ago (2021). I was not at fault they essentially slammed right into my passenger dootire and slid up the car to the front from there.
The car was repaired and given back to me no issues looking brand new and ran great.
About maybe 18 months later maybe even longer than that the side i was hit on started shaking/wobbling aggressively more so at higher speeds and when braking.
I took it into the shop and they said it was struts so i had it replaced and no problems again. The mechanic did note that it would be better if i got my generic brakes switched out with Subaru ones, and that it might be a little bumpy with those pads when braking until i did.
The dealership had been closed during the corona when i really needed it done, i couldn't wait any longer as it wouldn't be safe and do i went with a local shop so i could at least have functioning breaks. I was told it would be fine to just wear the pads down that i had now and just switch back in the future to the Subaru pads.
Well it's now been almost a year since my strut on the passenger side was replaced and I've noticed the past few days when i drive on the highway it's vibrating again pretty bad.
Would this be the strut again? I'm planning to take it in but already have a big tune up coming up and can't really afford a strut job again on top of everything.
Is it the strut possibly again or is there somewhere else/something else on the car in that area that could be loose or making the problem pop up again? Or will i just have to budget to repair this pretty often?
I am just not really familiar with this part of a car so any guidance or suggestions i would really appreciate, thank you for your help.

2023.05.31 02:07 TinFoilBeanieTech Weird reverse Uno situation as a driver
We have an couple of hearing impaired, elderly neighbors that frequently walk in our neighborhood. We also have young drivers. The old folks get startled easily because their perception isn’t so keen, then they rush to get out of the road while angry at the drivers. Things kind of escalated and they started harassing the kids.
fuckcars has given me different perspective, so I told the neighbors that it’s not their job to scramble out of the way. “You have a right to walk on the road, the cars can stop and wait.” I told them we’ve instructed the young (and all) drivers’ job to stop, give pedestrians plenty of space, and wait until the way is safe and clear.
What was amazing to me is the surprise on the old folks’ faces. It’s like they’ve never considered that pedestrians have equal (or even priority) right to the road. I think they’ve been stressed out because they’ve felt they’ve had to fight, or flee, to use the road for walking. They couldn’t compute what I was telling them at first. They were geared for an argument about those darn teens, and I threw them a reverse Uno card telling them they needn’t get upset about something that was their right: safe use of neighborhood roads to walk.
They had been doing other, un-neighborly, things to escalate the drama and make me concerned about our kids, but all of the other drivers were able to de-escalate and make the pedestrians feel safer.
One thing it reinforced for me: I don’t want to live in car centric area when I’m old. I want to be able to walk everywhere, slowly, without fear of being run over. Actually this should be true for young kids, or any age.

2023.05.31 02:07 Ok-Cheetah-3497 Krystal and Saagar Both Had Garbage Positions Today
Today, Krystal's monologue was about the harm of climate change relative to housing, discussion the cost of insurance, reinsurance and government funds. What I cannot figure out is why she wants anyone to do anything about this at all. The takeaway should not be that we need to raise more taxes for climate change or give bigger bailouts to insurance companies in exchange for taking on more risk. Rather, it should be STOP FUCKING BUILDING HOMES IN HIGH RISK AREAS. This should not be a controversial take. Why the fuck do people keep rebuilding in northern California forests??? Why do people go back to tornado valley, or hurricane hot spots? This shit has to stop. If you can't insure it, instead of the government insuring your risk, we should just buy you out, make the area a nature preserve and be done with it.
Similarly, Saagar was talking about the growing male-female divide around college attendance, and its knock on effects for male loneliness and the disintegration of the nuclear family. He has long been a complainer about the blank checks to universities, so he tried to shoe horn his views about that in here too. But what he seems to really be missing is that COLLEGE IS NOT A JOBS PROGRAM AND NEEDS TO BE DEPOLITICIZED. Everyone should get at least a 2 year, and probably a 4-year degree. I don't care if you are going to make a living as a plumber, an engineer or a pot tender. University is there to sculpt your mind as you get closer to peak development with more nuanced and interesting information than what we can typically deliver in a high school setting. If college was both mandatory and free at point of service just like k-12 education, then the political bullshit would go away, as would the education based class differences. We set the bar way too fucking low for people in our nation - if you have been raised so badly that you cannot complete a university liberal arts that is a major competitive problem for our nation and it is a major problem causing the so-called political divide. We already know there is a big difference between majors like philosophy and structural engineering - college can accommodate a very wide range of talent and interests, while still creating a level playing field for discussion.

2023.05.31 02:03 Melthengylf Can you help me understand the argument of Saagar?
So, we have men letting go of college, and women going more to college. The reason for this, I would argue is simple: the wage gap pressures women to have a higher education in order to have a stable wage to be independent. Men, on the other hand, can have high-paying manual jobs which usually require physical strength and thus are less searched by women.
Why is this a problem? Both men and women are happier in this way. Both get to be independent and forge a stable life on their own.
The idea that the "elite" is college educated people is just not true. Many of the college degrees women prefer are extremely low paying. Specifically things like K-12 teaching (or even pre-K) and Social Work.
Low paying jobs that require education, like pre-K are similar in incomes as high-paying jobs that do not require education, such as a plumber.
So, values from a pre-K teacher and a plumber may be extremely different. Relatively low income people with college, like social workers, tend to be on the far left and relatively high income people without college, like oil workers or plumbers tend to be in the far right.
However, that is a problem of values, not of social class. They are in the same social class: somewhere in the middle.

We have a small community of PvP gamers who like to get into comp matches & trials, but we're mostly centralized around raiding (going after triumphs, challenges, seals, and teaching).
We have a very well organized Discord server. Most of the roster are primarily Xbox based, and then some PC players. We can all use either Xbox chat, or Discord for voice & comms.
We have several groups currently which are doing weekly reset runs in the pinnacle and featured raid, and working on master challenges & Grandmaster Nightfalls.
Most of the roster is Eastern time zone based, but we do have folks from Central, Pacific, and Australia. Most everyone works normal jobs & games in the evenings, usually around 9PM ET (though sometimes you'll find folks on midday - but that's pretty rare).
Discord server participation is a must as that is how we coordinate events. Must be 18 years or older.
Let me know if you're interested!

2023.05.31 02:00 alispropriisvolat8 Criteria on how to find a good nanny
Hi all! I’ve been lurking this sub for a while. I used to have a nanny for my 1 and half year old and it wasn’t a good experience at all. She would not show up to work at least 2 times a week, my husband and I have very hectic jobs and suddenly not having help becomes very hard on us. We’re looking to find a nanny who would pick up our toddler from pre-school at 11 am(he goes from 8am to 11 am), give him lunch(we need nanny to prep his lunches), get him to nap and be with him until 5 pm.
What can we do to attract good nannies? I live in Los Angeles area, what would a good hourly rate be, we will have paid vacation as well as sick days etc. any tips are really appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

2023.05.31 01:57 MrMassacrer 23 [M4F] - VA/Online - An Optimistic Post
Okay, full disclosure: I'm awful at writing these. I'm just gonna take my best shot to describe who I am and what I'm looking for, but I'm definitely better at conversations than bios.
I'll start with a little about myself. I'm 23 and recently moved near the DC area to start my first job (in AI research) out of college. This came with way more responsibilities than I was ready for, but I've finally got a half decent grasp of being an "adult". Thus, I figured it's about time I take the next step in my life and try to meet someone special to share it with. Physically, I'm 5'8 with an average build and dark brown hair. In terms of hobbies, I absolutely love playing board games. In fact, I attend a board game club three times a week and have a fairly sizable collection. For anyone familiar (or interested in) hobby board gaming, my personal favorites are Lisboa and Ark Nova. Besides board games, I also play video games, go hiking, and travel whenever I get the opportunity. In fact, I'm writing this post from a hotel room in Portugal. Lastly, I really enjoy reading comics and watching movies or TV shows. I have aphantasia which means I can't visualize anything in my mind's eye, so these mediums are pretty much a necessity for me to appreciate stories. Lastly, to avoid any future dealbreakers, I'll also add that I drink only socially, never smoke, am apolitical and agnostic, and am fully vaccinated.
Okay that might have been more writing about myself than I've done in my whole life. So let's switch topics and talk about you. Firstly, you're very great to have made it this far into my wall of text! Additionally, I definitely prefer people somewhat local to my area, but I'm open to meeting people from anywhere in the US. I'm not picky about physical appearance, but I definitely want someone who either shares or is open to exploring my interests and hobbies. Lastly, my love language is quality time, so I'm interested in someone who wants to hang out together somewhat often.
If you're still reading, please don't hesitate to reach out via DM or chat. If you're struggling to start the conversation (like I was with this post) send over three unique facts about you. I'll even sweeten the pot and reply with pet pictures for each one!

2023.05.31 01:53 Maleficent-Reach-744 Research Scientist at a University vs Entry-level Industry Job
Hey all, I'm graduating with my PhD in the summer semester and have a few job opportunities I'm deciding between.
Two jobs are pretty standard "entry-level" phd jobs (i.e., research analyst jobs at medium sized companies). The other job is a research scientist position in a university setting (a satellite institute that's affiliated with the university). So no teaching obligations, a larger salary, and what feels like more job equity than a postdoc.
The salary/benefits for all 3 jobs are comparable, and I prefer the university job in terms of fit/topic. However, I am not interested in academia and want to go into industry. I'm aware that postdocs are a bad idea if you want to go into industry, but as mentioned above, this job seems to me like it wouldn't be considered the same way as a postdoc.
So, I was wondering if anyone had any insight on whether it's better to head straight into an industry job, or whether the university-affiliate job would be considered (in future job searches) roughly on par with an entry-level industry job? Obviously the nuance of any situation is different, but just wanted to see what the vibes were :)
Edit: I'm in the USA

2023.05.31 01:53 searchingfortao Could I get a code review?
Hi! I'm new to Go (coming from 15+ years of Python) and as part of my learning process, I've tried to port one of my simpler Python scripts over.
The result is a functional program (though the
Python version also supports dynamic tab completion) but I'm convinced that I've made a variety of mistakes and transgressions around how to write Go properly. This is to be expected of course, and I'm hoping that some of you here can take a look and tell me where I've gone wrong.
Specifically I'm most interested in cases where I might have followed some bad/antiquated advice for a particular pattern, or where I could/should be using a more commonly-used library to do a job I've coded manually. I've stuffed the script with comments outlining my concerns if you're a big reader.
So anyway, if you've got a few minutes and feel like teaching an old Python nerd some new Go tricks, I'd appreciate your insight:

2023.05.31 01:51 Storms_Wrath The Human Artificial Hivemind Part 377: Artificial Apocalypse
First Previous Wiki "I should not let you enter," the old man said, gazing unhappily at Phoebe standing beside Penny in her dream.
"Please. You're mind controlling her, so I think you would have stopped me if you wanted to,"
Phoebe replied.
"Not control. Humans don't 'control' the air, they breathe it. In the same way, I feed on Penny's psychic energy."
"I see. And when you said you had infinite power, what exactly did you mean?"
"I do. But my power is dead," Death said. "That is how I am."
"And you can exist in the psychic realm, but not the regular mindscape?"
"Sometimes."
"What defines those times?"
"It depends. People dying, obviously. About a quarter of all deaths in the galaxy aren't Sprilnav."
"A quarter?"
"Yes."
"So I assume they're killing themselves."
"Yes."
"And that energy isn't a constant influx?"
"Somewhat. It comes in both a trickle and waves. But I know you're going to ask more. The answer is that the Progenitors give conceptual protection to the Sprilnav. The further away a Sprilnav is from them in space, time, and more, the weaker they are. That is why Elders can survive impacts that could vaporize metal, not just their implants and psychic energy."
"Conceptual weight seems to feature heavily in your power," Phoebe said.
"It does."
"And you are a concept. If you fought Fate, for example, would you win?"
"Depending on what you mean by winning. Really, concepts cannot overcome each other."
Phoebe smiled. That meant that Death would want a way to do that. Probably the hivemind was the way. With that answer, she continued.
"Concepts cannot overcome each other? So you don't have a fate, and Fate can't die?"
"Not really."
"Can you die?"
"No."
"Does Fate have a fate?"
"I don't know. But really, there's no way I'll tell you that even if I find out."
"How many people have died?" Phoebe asked.
"Define people, and define death."
"People as in sentient and sapient beings, which are capable of thought and planning. Death as in the ceasing of characteristics of life such as the termination of blood or gaseous material within the living being, as well as the ceasing of psychic energy and brain activity within the being, for those that have some equivalent to brains."
"It is not specific. Quintillions, at least. A lot more, really. There's many that don't quite fit the condition. If you count the moments before the great war, you'd need exponents."
"We have numbers for that."
"Okay. Sprilnav deaths alone, even with the conceptual madness of the... what do they call it? The Source war. Yes. It's quite a lot," Death said.
"Give me a number, please."
"Fine. 39 undecillion."
Phoebe was silent. There were so many Sprilnav that it was stupid. Even thinking about the level of that fall was truly insane. And she assumed that during the fall, they had a very bad time. It would have been madness and anarchy with the added characteristic that everyone also had nukes and shields.
"There's more than the observable universe, you know."
"How many died in the aftermath of the Source war?"
Death frowned. "1 in 30,000 Elders lived. 1 in 850,000 regular Sprilnav lived. Of those, 875 Sprilnav didn't end their lives."
"875 thousand? Million?"
"No."
Phoebe thought that was sad. Basically, in the whole galaxy, every Sprilnav had died, at least statistically. The number alive right now, even still outnumbering the galaxy, was a rounding error. If what he said was true, the Source had killed more people than any other being, alive or dead. And that assumed there weren't any other civilizations of a similar scale to them.
She also didn't bother to ask how the Sprilnav population was now so large. Whether it was inbreeding or cloning didn't matter much. But it helped to explain why so many Elders were so crazy all the time. She needed to stay on task, however.
"Alright. Back to you. You're not a psychopomp?"
"No. I do not interfere with souls. I am the concept of death."
"So, do you get energy from stars blowing up?"
"That is not dying."
"But people believe that supernovae are the deaths of stars."
"That does not shift the concept itself."
That was interesting. So Death wasn't a belief harvester, then. Not the type that actually was shaped by the belief of sapient beings in their actions. Concepts existed and were finite and infinite in scope. Maybe some were truly finite. They could conflict with each other, and their influence would generate a weakening effect, like destructive interference with alternate types of waves. But that did not mean that was always so. Perhaps they could do the opposite.
It was likely that Death worked with Fate at least sometimes and that if Entropy existed, it was most concerned with the Sprilnav. Conceptual protection by the Progenitors was another interesting concept that she hoped to probe if Nova ever returned. She did have the feeling he was either doing everything for fun or entirely serious. He was certainly not quite there in the head after the experience that Death had shared with her.
But for conceptual beings like him, there were rules and regulations, perhaps bound by whatever absolute concept they fit within. Whether they were hard rules or not was unknown. Defined in their structure, but not their limits. And perhaps that meant there was more to figure out here. "Interesting. And if you need to feed off psychic energy, why not use psychic amplifiers?"
"It's not the same quality. Humans don't drink pure water only; they drink it for the minerals and other healthy products within it. It's the same for me."
"But you can't die. Why would it matter?"
"I can diminish. It would affect things, though not as you expect."
"That is interesting also," Phoebe replied. "Are you suggesting that you could diminish, which means other concepts can as well?"
"Not directly," Death nodded with a smile. He stumbled, clutching his head. Phoebe felt a vast energy press down upon them and could feel something brush against her mind like a bullet just grazing the skin. In that one motion, she'd felt more inherent danger than all previous enemies combined, so much danger that it bypassed her artificial instincts entirely to lay thickly on her tongue as an acrid taste.
She didn't fall to the ground, and neither did Penny. They stood there, searching for the source of the pressure.
"What is this?" she asked.
"Luck..."
"Luck is a concept that watches over others?"
A swirling vortex opened up around Phoebe, parallel to the ground. Light and other equivalents shone out of it, dancing around its interior, piercing the layers of dark black fog. The mindscape trembled slightly, and the ground underneath Penny and Phoebe cracked. A small voice whispered out of it, though it was easily audible.
"No more."
"Look, if you're really Luck, then-"
"No more," the voice repeated. "You are done here. Do not come back."
Phoebe snorted. "If you think this little mysterious act is going to intimidate me, you're wrong. And I will."
"Not today."
"You don't get to decide-"
"I decide all."
Phoebe's head seemed to split with pain, and she found herself lying dizzily next to Penny. The human's chest was heaving, and sweat laced her eyebrows and cheeks.
"That went well," Phoebe coughed. The headache receded far too slowly. But she'd still learned a lot. Conceptual beings had concerns, for one. They likely cared about getting stronger in some cases. Humanity had some sort of outside context power, but more than that, the hivemind itself could actually use it.
"It did. Thanks, and sorry you couldn't get more."

"Hello, Rank 10 Ambassador Liinara. To what do we owe the pleasure?" Ambassador Varirlar asked, letting a small smile curve around her snout. Putting the other party at ease would make this conversation easier, especially since she suspected this call wasn't just a concerned friend.
"You might want to sit down for this," her counterpart said. "Remember Exii'darii?"
Varirlar froze.
"Don't tell me you let her free."
"We didn't. The Sprilnav broke her out."
"Elders?"
"Not that we saw. But it is likely they are working for one," Liinara said, her antennae twitching. Varirlar knew there was a pheromone effect that went on with the Vinarii, which still couldn't be fully translated into description by words.
"Alright. You know how serious this is, I assume?"
"Yes."
"Many factions in the Alliance, especially the more recently joined ones, will not be happy."
"We understand."
"I can speak on behalf of the Alliance in asking a request for an official apology. Furthermore," Varirlar said, holding up a single claw, "I want your government to share the full containment procedure down to the alloy composition of the materials. Assuming you actually kept her in a prison cell for over a decade, that meant you had a way to keep her from escaping. Tell us how."
"You wish to recapture her?"
"We are not as naive as we once were," Varirlar said. "The Hateful Galaxy has taught the rest of the Alliance the same hard lessons it taught me. The Breyyanik did not forget its nature when we settled Ceres."
"Ah, so you wish to either use her or kill her."
"There is no use for her," Varirlar said. "Unless our scientists can propose a solution, there will be no use for her. She will be put down like the dog she is." "Then we are in agreement."
"Yes. The Alliance and the Vinarii's relationship has been tense for a while. We haven't spoken with Calanii or Ashnav'viinir in several years now. Why have you decided to diverge from us? Do we no longer suit your interests?"
"Not exactly. Even besides the... tumultuous events of Humanity's first contact, there are other powers at play. And there is evidence, in some cases, of Sprilnav interference." Liinara tapped her skull three times, the Vinarii way of saying that someone was a few branches short of a tree.
"Interference. Are there ways to prevent it?"
"Not officially. If you wish to discuss terms, I can set you up with one of our intelligence agencies. They will not be willing to share national secrets for nothing, however."
"I think this... debacle should count enough as recompense, don't you?" Varirlar smiled.
"Perhaps. But I am not who must be convinced. With that said, I wish you luck, Ambassador. I am glad that your Alliance has moved to take a more realistic path. And Ashnad'darii is still imprisoned, I presume?"
"Under much heavier guard once this call ends. But yes, she is still in a cell. Yes, she has implants. But she is leverage."
"Her usefulness is little," Liinara warned. "Calanii won't care at all about her."
"Everyone keeps saying that. But let's just say there are reasons she isn't dead."
"You should kill her."
"We should. We maybe could. Assuming that the official way is still trying to get an implant under her chitin to kill her instead of just launching her into the sun. Granted, that would kill her eventually."
"She is dangerous. Unable to be trusted."
"She was broken years ago," Varirlar said. "From what I've heard, she wears human-made clothes now instead of going naked. Plus, she has given us insights on Vinarii society, particularly involving its hierarchy."
"You're using her as a spy."
"A spy that hasn't seen a Vinarii face in almost twenty years? Pretty crappy at that job, I'd say. We both know that she killed hundreds of thousands personally, and was willing to kill many more. If she did not have her uses, she would have already been killed. Plus, there's a safety procedure in place."
"If you mean a bomb collar, good luck with that."
Varirlar didn't mean a collar. Psychic energy monitors were closely tied to a pair of fusion bombs that were embedded in her prison's walls. Should she get too far from the natural cell, they would explode. After all, the room had a bed, bathroom, sanitized entertainment, and a food and water delivery system. She was definitely mostly rehabilitated, but her crimes would follow her for the rest of her life. Their severity made her a case that would likely never fully rejoin any society unless it was an afterlife.
"Well. This has been productive," Varirlar replied with a smile. "But unfortunately,"
"Wait. I'm here to tell you something else, as well. The Dual Systems Trading Company wants to send more ships to your Sol system."
"How many more?"
"Umm, around 400."
"Why don't you have an exact number?"
"The negotiations are still underway. But they seek to bring Vinarii products to the internal Alliance markets, particularly the small Vinarii and larger Wisselen exclaves living within."
"They wouldn't be able to get you much money, unless it's in various Alliance cash forms. There's an angle, isn't there?"
"Well, yes. We don't know it yet. But it is suspicious."
Varirlar sighed. "Have you given them special brain scans?"
"What do you... oh. You suspect that?"
"Suspicious and spontaneous changes in their policy toward the Alliance, as we are suffering from issues with Sprilnav messing with people, and wanting to send us ships? I'm not stupid, Ambassador Liinara."
"I did not mean to insinuate-"
"Sure you didn't. Now, I shall tell you something very interesting. Are you ready?"
"Yes."
"Very well," Varirlar said dramatically, adjusting her mane as she leaned forward. "The hivemind would be willing to meet with your... incapacitated members for study from afar."
"What do you mean?"
"Intelligence."
"We cannot trust it."
"I see. You are aware that you have just called all of Humanity untrustworthy, right? That's quite the insult, unprovoked."
"Apologies, Ambassador, that is not what I meant. The hivemind is likely to have its own motivations, and could be motivated to lie about what it saw."
"As could your own operatives, who could be pinned to the floor by any regular Sprilnav and chipped within a minute. Don't act like they don't have legendary hacking abilities as well. None of your systems are safe."
"And the Alliance's are?"
"With both Edu'frec and Phoebe watching over them, then yes."
"Ah, so you still think that the Sprilnav don't use AI."
"Why would they? It would threaten their own sense of superiority. If they already used AI, everyone would have a chip when they were born. There would be no resistance, because eventually a logical mind would not tolerate the constant pushback."
"You are free to believe what you do. However, my thoughts do diverge. As for Phoebe, she did a disappearing act for a while, didn't she?"
"And?"
"She isn't exactly reliable either," Liinara replied.
"If you're drowning in the ocean, would you rather have an island that storms a little or nothing at all?" "I fail to see how her situation compares to that analogy. It was a very serious problem, if I understand it."
"And what do you suggest, then? Constantly bring her down over it until she resents us and shoves her hands through our hearts? Phoebe's a person, Ambassador. An Alliance citizen, a Luna citizen, and even more importantly than that, a friend. It's quite hurtful that you are suggesting such, unless it is the official stance of the Vinarii government. I assure you, the mess with your company trying to invade us is not resolved, either. Words cannot heal what actions injured. If you want reconciliation, it would be best to take the first steps yourself. Do not tell the Alliance to alienate Phoebe just because she made a mistake."
"Your own intelligence agencies would do the same in many cases."
"I fail to see how her situation compares to that analogy," Varirlar sighed. "Phoebe is the single most useful asset that the Alliance has come across that is not a purely psychic entity such as the hivemind or Gaia, or some paragon of a species like Dilandekar or Penny."
"So she's an asset, and not a person?"
"Please, Liinara. In the world we live in, the galaxy we live in, everyone is both. Do not lie to yourself. However, the Alliance wishes to show its people a shred of respect so it does not drag them through the mud when they made a mistake. Even before that, rehabilitation was the goal of Humanity. Why else do you think that we have prisons instead of just a wall where the bad people stand in front of to be shot? If a starving mother stole something, that doesn't mean we chop off her hands. We get her the help she and her child needs, so they can rejoin Alliance society and raise us all higher."
"Your Alliance has not fixed poverty like it said, then."
"Kind of difficult when one of your species is at a near constant feudal civil war, and another had a third of its populace halfway through insurrection. I assume that the Vinarii Empire has no such problems, correct? And again, I remind you that you are supposed to represent its official position, not your own."
Varirlar suspected that the Ambassador here had something else going on, as well. Whether it was mind control, being paid to screw this up, or something else entirely, this wasn't how such a conversation was meant to go. She only was continuing it to see if Liinara slipped up on something interesting.
"My position is as a Rank 10 Ambassador. You would do well to respect that."
"Respecting positions instead of people does not make sense when the position is respectable and the people are not. You have insulted Phoebe, Humanity, and the Alliance with your words. Were I to relay them, you might see a more hostile stance to the Vinarii Empire. Remember that you have agreements with us."
"Yes. Times have changed."
"I am sure that the Hive Emperor would not exactly like to hear what you have said. But do not worry, Ambassador. We will learn the truth of your words soon enough, one way or another. That is all for now. Perhaps I will ask for a Rank 11 Ambassador next time, to save myself the insults."
She ended the call and sighed. Varirlar could spin the wheel of chance, but the two answers were likely either mind control or someone being paid off to harm relations between them. Given Liinara's expressions, she didn't assume it was translation errors to blame. And this call was on a secure line, even more so than most.
Really, the Vinarii could be doing it. But she smelled something was up. There was likely a very rich Vinarii who the Sprilnav had either made to work with them or forced to, using mind control. Perhaps it really was the answer to both. But she knew not to just assume that. When you had a hammer, everything looked like a nail. It was an apt human saying for the situation.
Varirlar contacted several officials after she wrote her report with the attached recording of the situation. She'd done her best to appear calm, though responding to Liinara was not the orthodox method. But this way, she'd drawn out a lot more on how she viewed the Alliance, giving them a window into whatever was happening, blurry and small though it may have been.
She didn't really think that Calanii would have condoned this. Indeed, she might have just had her last diplomatic call ever. Assuming, of course, that the Sprilnav hadn't managed to chip him, too. If they had, though, the Alliance's situation would get bad fast. Luckily they were already at war with Aphid. Everything was already mobilized, and extra listening satellites in deep space had been set up. The last time the Vinarii Royal Navy had come to visit Humanity, they had not been ready. Perhaps now they were.

Phoebe stood on the surface of Mercury, just underneath the great mass of the Mercury-class gun that had been built there. The first one that is. Now there were two great behemoths above her head, rising hundreds of meters into the sky. Not that Mercury really had a sky. Maybe someday, that would change.
For now, though, what mattered was the task at hand. The guns were already checked and cleared for firing. A small misalignment had destroyed a Charon-class gun in the past, so they were taking no chances with this. Now, the massive laser would serve its purpose. And, of course, the results would be live streamed.
The planet itself was a world almost covered in machinery. The atmosphere was toxic, filled with aerosols and gaseous industrial waste. There were no detectable life signs on it, whether they were communications, psychic emissions, or even just patches of warmth away from machinery. No subterranean life either, of any kind. Not even microbes had been spared from Aphid's apparent purge, if they had ever existed on this rock at all.
And Aphid's signature station designs orbited it also, whipping around its poisoned atmosphere at several miles a second. That was a sign that everyone on the planet, if there had ever been any, was dead.
A stream of ships poured in and out, guarded by a vast military fleet. In the Sol system, the amplifiers were powering up, and Brey was starting to form the outside of the portals she'd use for the guns, one on each side of the planet, at the equator. Her analysis had determined the areas in which opposite strikes would do the most damage. Phoebe had ensured to check for subterranean activity using Gaia's matter senses.
That had revealed large underground development areas, where presumably more of Aphid's mechanical drones were going to be made. Brey finished forming the portal as Phoebe took a last look at the spires of Aphid's world, ready to see how they'd do when the lasers hit.
She moved the stealth ships around the planet, continuing to watch the shield. It wasn't at full power, likely because Aphid wasn't expecting an attack. She didn't have a presence here in the mindscape, either. She was using far dumber programs as proxies across the Q-comms connections so that he could not detect a hint of anything wrong.
Combined with the Alliance's stealth technology, it would allow for a total surprise attack. Brey finished building up the portals in front of the guns, and Phoebe couldn't help but notice how deep the portals looked. They didn't seem like a flat plane like usual but had a sort of three-dimensionality to them this time. Interesting.
"Fire!" Phoebe ordered. Brey's avatar, which was standing beside an android back on Earth, grinned.
The barrels of the guns glowed cherry red, and vibrations radiated out from their heavily reinforced bases. Even with the android's solar shades, the light was still incredibly bright. Just from underneath it, the temperature was reaching almost 300 degrees. Just as she'd calculated.
On the other side of the portal, things got interesting. Brey's portal was invisible, but the energy coming from it was anything but. It almost looked like Aphid's planet was being impaled through a pole of pure white light. That light slammed down onto the planet's surface in three seconds, passing through the atmosphere as if it wasn't even there. Gaia stood beside the portals in the Sol system, blueshifting the light as much as possible. Instead of visible light, most of the weapon's energy, at least on the other side, was gamma. It was enough radiation to kill anything on the planet, for sure. Or to fry any electronic systems, such as a resident AI's servers.
The pure power of the two guns released a constant molten shockwave of a mix of vaporized rock, metal, and most other materials rushing outward. Buildings were snapped like twigs, their ends going flying but never landing. The heat melted others, and earthquakes in some areas that hadn't yet been struck by the spreading destruction were rampant.
The planet didn't explode or anything. The military ships that were far enough away to remain working just moved away, activating shields that fizzled out due to the intense energy beyond them. That energy would have destroyed Phoebe's android had Brey not used the portal to shield them as well. And as for her observation ships, their stealth coatings were quickly fried.
But the reinforced hulls were made specifically to withstand the effects of this for as long as possible. Cities of metal, all empty except for countless billions of drones wandering their streets, were wiped away. And then the portals began moving, shining around the equator. The effects spread and repeated, with the seas of methane catching fire before they, too, were vaporized in the path of the Mercury-class guns.
The atmosphere was boiled and stripped off the planet within hours. Most of the factories and foundries in the city were turned to either molten slag, collapsed by giant earthquakes, or vanished entirely. The devastation in the equatorial region was total. There was nothing left in a solid band 1500 miles wide around the equator of the planet, save for the broken bases of destroyed skyscrapers.
Further out, the damage was from earthquakes, snapped power lines, and broken pipes, as well as rubble that had fallen onto transport roads and collapsed tunnels. Alone, perhaps the problems could have been dealt with. But not together.
"Just to be sure," Brey asked. "You don't need the remains, right?"
"No. I will make what I need, that way I know it is safe," Phoebe replied, looking at Brey's avatar. It had the signature black fur of her empowered form, with red eyes and sharpened claws. The armor looked cool, as well.
"Alright. I'm going to go dump a few billion tons of plasma on it, then."
Phoebe smiled. "Alright. Have fun."
"I did. Good job on the guns. Get enough of those, and it'll be like the full Dyson swarm's hitting you in a straight line."
"That's the plan. The test was more than successful, and Aphid got a taste of the justice we deserve."

2023.05.31 01:40 Dyanpanda Is there a way to isolate materials (and jobs) but not dupes?
I am trying to build a ridiculous rocket exhaust recovery system that involves bead pumps of liquid lead and expectedly, everything that gets carried out of that room is 500c. My problem is that my dupes want to store it or carry it w/o atmo suits through my base, to the hot storage below my base. Is there any way to isolate dupe behavior so that they cannot carry materials past or through an area?
I know how to use weight plates to close doors and cancel jobs, but they then waste huge amounts of time on travelling for fake jobs.
Somehow I'd like to make it so that for each dupe, if they are on side A, they cannot see or reach materials from side b, and vice versa. I cant see how to avoid using dedicated doors for each dupe, nor avoid also ruining regular pathing AI for non material jobs like time off or sleep jobs.

2023.05.31 01:37 yolkofficial I have $50, how do I get into a living/roommate situation while avoiding tipping off my mom while also staying safe cus I'm trans?
Basically, my mom has raised me to be dependent on her. I'm 18 but I still live with her. I feel like a prisoner in her house. I can't leave during the day or night because she wants to know where I am at all times.
I have no friends to help me. I need a place to stay, I need the safety and security of a home that she has nothing to do with. I want to be able to start to live my adult life without her trying to "advocate" for me, I want her out of my personal business. Understand my situation:
- She has control over my savings account. I cannot close this account in secret because she will see and confront me. I cannot get to the bank without a ride.
- I'm scared to up and leave because she will call me/the cops trying to track me down. I can't go very far away from the house because of the imaginary boundary she's restricted me to(years of emotional abuse, please understand I don't know life being anything other than living in fear of her yelling and crying at me).
- I don't know how to drive and I don't have a car. She is the only one who can teach me how to drive. She drives me everywhere.
- I have 100% no way to reach out to the local community for help because she is paranoid and is basically my only contact with the outside world(outside of the internet). My family loves her and thinks I'm selfish and mean. I have no one. If I started hanging out with someone new, she would want to know everything about them and be involved.
- I cannot get a job because I get burnt out because of the constant anxiety of living with her, I'm trying to get on SSDI so the job wouldn't work after that goes through, and I can't travel to the job in secret because she must know where I am all hours of the day and she would insist on driving me to work.
- I don't feel comfortable reaching out to LGBTQ+ resources in the area because she is involved with most of them (she fetishizes being a supportive mother to my transition when she really just wants whatever her mental idea was of the child she gave birth to, ie a kid that loves her).
- She refuses to give me her copy of my original birth certificate, which probably also translates to the copies of my new/old social security card and my updated birth certificate. Please understand I have my own copies of my updated documents, but I don't want her to hold on to my documents because she uses them to fawn over the child she never had(she's still mourning the "loss" after two years of me being out) and it makes me sick, she's delusional and the situation is getting harder and harder to fake through.
Yeah, so basically I feel hopeless of getting out of the house. I feel hopeless trying to reach out because I just come off as a lazy pathetic man child victimizing myself and that I need to "grow up". I want to. Please, I don't want to live like this. I'm desperate. She's going to find me if I try to leave and she'll yell and cry and I don't have any place to go because she's going to track me down and drag me home and yell and cry. I don't know how long the state is going to take to provide assistance, but I don't even think they'll try to get me housing, just assisted living care and SSDI, I need help. This is me reaching out, I live in Montana, I know it's stupidly unsafe to put myself out like this but I'm desperate and I don't feel like I'm even alive. I need a place to go, preferably I can move in all my stuff, but I am okay with just my the suitcases and bags I have, or really however much room I can have is what I'll bring. I take meds and I can keep them hidden away. I would need rides, but I have my Learner's permit so we could start working on getting my license. I'll live in any room or the basement if it's livable, just anything so I can walk out of the house without being scared I'm going to upset my mom. I have a horrible potty mouth(as in I let the intrusive edgy thoughts out) and so preferably I don't want to be around young kids but if it's a roof over my head I'll do my best to be respectful.
I can't do anything to establish independence from her until I can be sure my mom can't try to stop me and/or yell and cry and chastize me because I'm not in her house anymore. I need a place to stay, then it's boots on the ground. Optimally, I'll try to be out as soon as I can get state support, hopefully no longer than a year. I want to live my life, I want to enjoy life, I want to meet new people, I want to be able to live life without being responsible for my mom's emotions. I want to have space so I can heal and be myself, I'm tired of walking on eggshells because she's only mentally abusive and there is no physical or digital way to prove she is hurting/depriving me of my needs because she provides everything for me. Please, I'm begging, I need help, I need to get out.
The plan: 1. Move away and carry only what can fit at the new house. 2. Close my savings account and open a new account without her being attached. 3. Obtain her copies of my birth certs and SS cards 4. Gain control over my phone bill(she uses my savings to pay for it, but she has the account info and maybe could try to take my phone to make me come back). 5. Get involved with the community and meet new people. 6. Work on and obtain my driver's license. 7. Move out on my own with state assistance.
I'm really sorry if this isn't a post for this sub, I am just worried that I'll find a room and then put myself in a compromised position because of my transition. If you consider your home safe for someone who is trans/gay and you live in Montana, please help me.

2023.05.31 01:34 Boring-Accountant640 A dad that needs some advice
I made a post awhile back trying to see if anyone has alternatives to spanking a child because I generally don't agree with it but it wasn't very helpful which I think is my bad because of my wording
Question is at the bottom the rest is just info to maybe help me
My son is 2 years I have spanked him once on the butt because is mother was doing dishes and he grabbed a knife and started running with it I had to chase him to get it away from him and with a mix of fear and anger because he would not listen I smacked his butt once it didn't hurt him far as I could tell he looked more confused than anything I was telling him no and come here and when I finally got it from him I smacked his butt while saying I said no no I felt horrible afterwards
I added the above for context
He use to hit bite kick before this happened but it has gotten worse over time more so for is mother
Additional info:
Far as doctors can tell he has no disabilities
We tell him no or that is bad we try our best to avoid saying you are bad because he isn't he is a kid and doesn't know any better my job is to teach him
When he listens we give him high fives and clap and yell yay so he knows he is being good
Far as we can tell he gets like this because he doesn't know the words yet to express him self so he gets frustrated
We have tried asking and showing him things to try and figure out what is wrong and help him
He bites us and hits us he also hits him self and pulls his hair when we so bad or if we try and stop him from doing certain things
Things I have tried:
Talking
Telling him to try and use his words
Saying no hitting
When he hits him self or pulls his hair I put his arms to his sides look him in the eye and say no no
I have tried time outs he just screams and cries till we just let him out and yes he once cried and screamed for 5 hours
We have tried giving him Things changing his diaper giving him multiple baths to just figure out what is frustrating him
If I can think of anything else to add I will add it in an edit
So my question is what are some other things I can try so he stops hitting and biting us and to stop hitting him self and pulling his hair and to try and get him to listen as I really don't know what else to try other than maybe spanking him which I do not want to do

2023.05.31 01:33 Appropriate_Rent_243 Feeling hopeless, and powerless about my life because of criminal record. (second time's the charm)
It seems as if I have essentially permanently ruined my life and there is no way to rebuild it. About 6 years ago I was arrested for a serious crime, and now it seems like my life is basically over. Right now I live with my parents, and I have a factory job that I hate. I'm a 28-year-old male. Very little social life. I've never even been on a date before. I managed to finish my college degree while I was on probation, but that doesn't seem to help at all with the job hunt (liberal arts degree).
I often think, that if what I have now is the best I can hope for, then there's no point in continuing with my life; I have nothing meaningful to look forward to.
When I was on probation I was in court-ordered specialized therapy and that was focused on teaching you how to prevent yourself from committing another crime. The therapist leading the group tried to claim that if you put the criminal behavior behind you, then your life will be better (which is a load of bullcrap. I've stayed away from the criminal behavior and my life is still miserable). In this therapy group, there were no stories of hope, everyone was just miserable.
During my probation, I also saw a regular therapist, but I didn't find it helpful. That guy taught me absolutely nothing. there was no homework, or anything, it was just me venting and accomplishing nothing. For a few years, I kept a journal every day, but I found that it was just another way for me to brood and wallow in my despair. I didn't find it helpful for dealing with my problems. I would mostly just rant about "society" in my journal.
I'm honestly skeptical about the whole CBT approach because it seems like it's based on the assumption that, if you're feeling bad, your emotions are just "wrong" and you need to feel something else. I think my feelings are an appropriate response to my situation. I think a person would have to be insane to be content with my circumstances. I've thought about going to therapy again, but I worry that it would just be me arguing with the therapist and calling them naive. Also, since so many of my circumstances are external, then no amount of therapy would solve those problems. No therapist can change how other people see my criminal record.
I don't do drugs, I don't drink, I don't use social media. On my days off I spend a lot of time browsing youtube, or playing video games. but even video games are becoming harder to enjoy lately. Sometimes I think of a hobby I might start doing, but then I decide that it's just not worth it in the end, because it's not going to fix any of my problems. I find it hard to be motivated to do anything productive because my life just feels so hopeless.
So my criminal record makes it very hard or even impossible to improve my life. People don't want to be friends with or date a criminal like me. The only work I can find is unskilled labor. Right now I work in a factory job I hate. I've been there about 5 years. It's a 12 hour shift in the most ungodly horrendous noise imaginable. I'm on my feet all day long and the air is filled with smog. I don't want to be doing this for the rest of my life, but I don't see how It's realistically possible to find anything better. It was hard enough to get this job, I hate job hunting and telling people about my criminal record.
My dream is to be a writer, but it seems like these days the only way to make a living as a writer is to be a public figure, and the public would not like that at all because of my criminal record. (no I don't have a sob story to explain my crime. What I did is inexcusable and people don't overlook the kind of crime I committed.) I find it hard to be motivated to write because, again, my whole life feels hopeless, and I know that people won't want to hear from a filthy criminal like me.
It feels like my life is in a ditch and there's no way out.
I often feel like I should just give up quit my job and live off my savings for as long as possible. Society doesn't want me, so why bother?
Sometimes I feel split because there's a part of me that says "If you learn to be content, then that's just giving up and you can't give up." while another part of me says "There's no point in trying, just give up."
Something that is pervasive in my life is worrying about how other people will react when they learn about my criminal record. I know that a therapist would probably try to say that my fears are unfounded and that I should just trust that people are forgiving, but to me, this just sounds naive. I don't like getting my hopes up. It's hard to make friends, knowing that eventually they will find out about your crime and hate you. So, why bother going through that pain? Human beings, in general, are spiteful, judgemental, and vindictive.
I know that some people might say "well what's the worst that could happen? a little dissapointment?" The worst that could happen to me is I get shot because someone hates me for my criminal record. To me, putting myself out there and meeting people is a real risk to my health and well-being.
So, I guess my question is: how do you build a meaningful life in a society that doesn't want you or anything you can contribute? how do you determine if things really are hopeless, or if your life is just permanently ruined? How do you find help to solve these kinds of problems if they are external problems that therapy can't solve?

2023.05.31 01:27 BreakfastFast457 Some ideas to fight unemployment in India
Nowadays, I am really worried about the unemployment which is gripping our youth. With the advancements in AI and recession in Europe and America the problem of unemployment is going to become humongous. The sad part is that no one is even talking about it. Not even youth, probably because cheap data is acting as a pain reliever for their unemployment. Here are some of the solutions that comes in my mind. What do you guys think about them?
- Cultural Subversion of India Cultural Subversion means changing the psyche of the population of a country by using various methods. Goverment should create some secret goverment departments who continuously do propaganda to make small businesses look cool. The people who start their own business should get awards and should be hailed as national heroes. Our society values respect much more than money. If business owner will get respect more kids would want to start businesses. Goverment should also fund verious movies and tv shows which glorifies small business owners. Goverment should also make it mandatory for each school and Collage to have a society/club which discusses and spreads enterpreneurship.
- Free Career Counseling In India, one of the biggest problems especially in rural areas is that students are not aware of what options are available. They don't know about any career other than the government jobs. They have no idea about freelancing. After the competition of 10th and 12th it should be made mendatory for all students to take a 1-2 month long course which makes tham aware of the various options which are available. Goverment should also modify the process of admissions to IITs. Many IITians are doing a specialisation which they have no interest in. As soon as the result of JEE are out all students should be made to take a 1 month course in a nearby IIT which makes them aware of various engineering streams and what they'll learn in them. Only then they should be allowed to apply for course and IITs of their choice.
